Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory, High Surf Advisory, Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 12:26 PM HST Apr. 29, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the

* flood advisory for...
the island of Maui in Maui County

* until 330 PM HST

* at 1225 PM HST, radar indicated a widespread area of light to
moderate rain moving over Maui from the southwest, with some
embedded heavier showers, especially near south Maui. Runoff
remains high from earlier rainfall, and Maui police reports that
south Kihei Road in Kihei is closed to traffic between Kaonoulu
Road and Maui Lu due to water on the roadway.

* This advisory includes the entire island of Maui.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to
flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due
to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on
foot. Turn around, don't drown.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 330 PM HST if heavy rain
persists.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect.

... High surf advisory now in effect until 6 PM HST this evening...

* surf... 5 to 8 feet along south facing shores.

* Timing... through this afternoon.

* Impacts... moderate... expect strong breaking waves, shore
break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming
difficult and dangerous

.Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by
ocean safety officials and exercise caution. Boaters should
expect recreational surfers and body boarders utilizing Harbor
channels to access surfing areas.

357 am HST Sat Apr 29 2017

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and The Big Island.

* Through Sunday afternoon.

* A front will stall over the central islands at the same time as
a potent low aloft moves over the western end of the state. This
will result in periods of heavy showers and thunderstorms that
could result in flash-flooding. Forecast models continue to
indicate that the greatest threat for flooding will occur over
Maui County, but given the unstable environment over the
central and eastern islands, Oahu and The Big Island have the
potential to receive heavy flooding rains as well.

* Heavy rain is expected to be widespread, especially in Maui
County through the weekend. Rain will not only affect windward
areas, but will also impact urban and leeward areas which are
more susceptible to flooding problems, especially in south and
west Maui. These areas include Kihei, Lahaina, Kaanapali, and
low-water crossings along piilani Highway between Kaupo and
Ulupalakua.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
