Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory, High Surf Advisory, Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 11:37 PM HST Apr. 29, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the

* flood advisory for...
the island of Maui in Maui County

* until 245 am HST

* at 1129 PM HST, radar indicated heavy rain across portions of the
island of Maui . Rain was continuing to fall at a rate of up to 2
inches per hour over mainly the eastern half of the island of
Maui. Stream gages in those areas have reported some minor rises
over the past few hours.

* This advisory includes the entire island of Maui.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to
flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due
to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on
foot. Turn around, don't drown.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 245 am HST if heavy rain
persists.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and The Big Island.

* Through Sunday afternoon

* a Kona low passing near the islands will bring the continued
threat of flash-flooding to most of the Hawaiian islands. While
the islands of Maui County are most likely to receive heavy rain
in the short term, moisture is expected to spread to The Big
Island and Oahu over the next day or so, increasing the
potential for flash flood-producing rainfall rates.

* Heavy rain is expected to be widespread, especially in Maui
County. Rain will not only affect windward areas, but will also
impact urban and leeward areas which are more susceptible to
flooding problems, especially in south and west Maui. These
areas include Kihei, Lahaina, Kaanapali, and low-water
crossings along piilani Highway between Kaupo and Ulupalakua.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
