Flash Flood Warning
Issued: 9:29 PM HST Jul. 23, 2016 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
the island of Hawaii in Hawaii County

* until 1230 am HST

* at 923 PM HST... radar showed a large band of heavy rain moving
onshore into the Kau district of The Big Island... from east of
Volcano to South Point. The heavy rain will continue moving slowly
to the northwest into upslope areas... with rainfall rates of 2 to
3 inches per hour likely. The ground is already saturated in this
area from earlier heavy rains. Excessive runoff is likely... and
Highway 11 at kawa flats may be vulnerable to closure due to
flooding.

* Locations in the warning include but are not limited to...
Hawaiian Paradise Park... Naalehu... Hawaiian Ocean View... Pahoa...
Pahala... Glenwood... Hawaiian acres and kawa flats.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding in imminent or occurring in
streams... roads... and low lying areas. Move to higher ground now.

Do not cross fast flowing water in your vehicle... or on foot. Turn
around... Don/T drown.

This warning may need to be extended beyond 1230 am HST if heavy rain
persists.

This Flash Flood Warning replaces the previously issued Flood
Advisory that was in effect for portions of the island of Hawaii in
Hawaii County.

Flash Flood Watch, High Surf Warning
Issued: 6:05 PM HST Jul. 23, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Kahoolawe... Lanai... Maui... Molokai and The Big Island

* through Sunday afternoon.

* Passing rainbands will bring periods of showers. There is a
chance for intense downpours or thunderstorms to develop
tonight... mainly near The Big Island... spreading to Maui County
late tonight. If heavier storms develop... they could cause
significant flash flooding. Storm total rainfall amounts of 8 to
12 inches... with isolated amounts up to 15 inches in higher
terrain... are possible.

* In addition to flood prone areas... heavy rain events of this
size may cause flooding in areas outside designated flood zones. Low
spots in roads can become dangerous and impassable due to severe
runoff. High amounts of debris in streams and gulches may clog
bridges and culverts resulting in dangerous flooding which could
occur outside the normal channels... and could also lead to
significant property damage.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is very dangerous.

You should monitor later forecasts and get prepared for flash
flooding this weekend. Never drive into areas where water covers
the Road. Turn around... Don/T drown.

408 PM HST Sat Jul 23 2016

... High surf warning now in effect until 6 PM HST Sunday for east
facing shores of The Big Island and Maui...

* surf... 15 to 20 feet tonight... lowering to 10 to 15 feet Sunday.

* Timing... through 6 PM HST Sunday.

* Impacts... very high... expect ocean water surging and sweeping
across beaches... coastal benches... and lava flows creating the
potential for impacts to coastal properties and
infrastructure... including roadways. Powerful longshore and
rip currents will be present at most beaches. Large breaking
waves and strong currents may impact Harbor entrances and
channels causing challenging boat handling.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Large breaking surf... significant shorebreak... and dangerous
currents make entering the water very hazardous. Anyone entering
the water could face significant injury or death.
