Wednesday...

The Winter Weather Advisory for snow, which is now in effect
until 4 am PST Wednesday.

* Timing: bands of moderate to locally heavy snow will continue
into this evening. There will be occasional breaks with the sun
popping through. Roads will primarily be wet today, but will ice
up around sunset with snow covered roads for the evening
commute.

* Snow accumulations: 1 to 3 inches on the valley floors with 3 to
5 inches above 5000 feet. Locally up to 10 inches through Washoe
Valley and Virginia City.

* Winds: south to southwest winds 10 to 20 with gusts to 35 mph.

* Snow levels: near the valley floor.

* Impacts: the band of heavy snow could produce rapid drops in
visibility with snowfall rates up to 2 inches per hour at
times.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Travel delays are likely across the Sierra front north of Highway
50 especially above 5000 feet. Roads may also become slick in
lower elevations this morning. Leave extra space between vehicles
since it takes longer to stop on slick roadways.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
a dam break in...
central Lyon County in west central Nevada...

* until 630 PM PST

* at 1233 PM PST, emergency management reported the imminent failure
of the South Dayton retention pond in the next 30 minutes to one
hour. Between 2 and 4 feet of water could inundate areas of East
Dayton within 2 to 3 hours of failure.

* Areas affected include East Dayton including, but not limited to,
these streets... Comstock, Sutro, Dayton valley Road.

Move to higher ground now. This is an extremely dangerous and
life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are
fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.

A band of heavy snow has set up across the Reno-Sparks vicinity
this morning, producing hazardous travel conditions for the
morning commute. Snowfall amounts of 1 to 4 inches are expected
through 9 am near and above 5000 feet, with lighter slushy
accumulations down to Lower Valley floors. Visibility will drop to
1 mile or less at times.

Use extra caution, slow down, and allow additional driving time
for this morning's commute around far western Nevada.
