... Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday evening
through late Saturday night...

* location... Lake County, western Chaffee County between 9000
and 11000 feet, Sangre de Cristo Mountains, western Mosquito
Range and eastern Chaffee County above 9000 feet, La Garita
Mountains, eastern San Juan Mountains, northwestern Fremont
County above 8500 feet, Wet Mountain Valley below 8500 feet,
Wet Mountains, Teller County, Rampart Range and pike's peak
region, northern El Paso County, the upper Huerfano river
basin below 7500 feet and western Las Animas County below 7500
feet.

* Cause and timing... a winter storm moving across Colorado will
bring heavy snow and gusty winds from Friday evening into
Saturday night.

* Snow accumulation... total snow accumulation in excess of 8
inches will be possible, with the potential for 1 to 2 feet over
the higher elevations of the the eastern mountains.

* Wind... north to northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with locally
higher wind gusts.

* Impact... snow and blowing snow at times is expected to create
hazardous weather and travel conditions in the watch area. In
addition, heavy wet snow will be capable of producing tree and
powerline damage.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant
snow accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor
the latest forecasts.

... Special Weather Statement...

At 403 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking developing showers and
thunderstorms over and near the Hayden Pass burn scar. These showers
and thunderstorms were moving to the northeast at 20 mph.

At this time, precipitation amounts during the previous hour over
the Hayden Pass burn scar was generally under .20 inches.

A period of moderate rain at times is anticipated over the Hayden
Pass burn scar during the next 2 hours with additional precipitation
amounts between .10 and .30 inches expected during this time-frame.
In addition, wind gusts around 30 mph at times are also possible.

While precipitation rates are not overly impressive, the potential
prolonged precipitation period may cause streams in the burn scar
areas to begin to rise.

Locations impacted include...
the Hayden Pass burn scar.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Move away from recently burned areas. If heavier rains develop, they
will be capable of creating Rockslides, mudslides and debris flows
in steep terrain, especially in and around recent burn scar
locations.

Precipitation may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio
stations and available television stations for additional
information and possible advisories and or warnings from the
National Weather Service.
