Record highs are possible for parts of the Northeast Monday and Tuesday, as parts of the central U.S. take a little breather from the worst of summer's dog day heat.

Expansive high pressure in the upper atmosphere will focus on parts of the East and West this week, sending heat indices well into the triple digits from the Mid-Atlantic states into the South.

Special Statement
Issued: 6:14 PM CDT Jul. 25, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Funnel clouds sighted over east central Illinois late this
afternoon...

At 610 PM CDT... the Champaign emergency manager reported a public
sighting of a funnel cloud near Saint Joseph in eastern Champaign
County along the Interstate 74 corridor.

Atmospheric conditions exist today across central and east central
Illinois that favor the possible formation of weak circulations
on a pre-existing boundary. Some of these circulations are occurring
underneath developing showers and thunderstorms... where a funnel
cloud may develop. Once the rain begins... The Funnel cloud dissipates.

Low hanging clouds can also appear to dip up and down at times... but
they will not show signs of any rapid rotation. An actual funnel
cloud will exhibit spinning in a counter-clockwise direction.

In rare instances these funnels may briefly touchdown. Stay alert
and be prepared to move to a safe shelter if a funnel cloud approaches
the ground.
