Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 6:02 PM CDT Jul. 28, 2016 – National Weather Service

... The Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory remains in effect until
700 PM CDT for central will and southeastern Cook counties...

At 600 PM CDT... Doppler radar indicated that the storms which
produced heavy rain have ended across the area. However... lingering
runoff may continue to produce Urban and Small Stream flooding in
the advisory area... but conditions should improve through the
evening.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Joliet... Orland Park... Tinley Park... Oak Lawn... Chicago Heights...
Lockport... New Lenox... Homer Glen... Blue Island... Dolton...
Park Forest... Alsip... Matteson... Mokena... Frankfort... Lemont...
Midlothian... Worth... Steger and Flossmoor.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:38 PM CDT Jul. 28, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement in effect from 1 am CDT Friday through
late Friday night...

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a beach
hazards statement... which is in effect from 1 am CDT Friday
through late Friday night.

* Location... northeast Illinois beaches and Northwest Indiana
beaches on Northern Lake County.

* Forecast wave heights... 3 to 5 feet.

* Strong rip currents and structural currents expected.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches.
People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you into deeper water.

Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and
wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can
sweep you into deeper water along the pier structure.

Exposed beaches are more likely to experience the most
significant wave and current impacts. Impacts at beaches with
protective breakwalls or jetties will be subject to the
orientation of structures as well as wind and wave direction.
