The Flood Warning continues for
the Saint Joseph River Michigan at Niles
* until further notice.
* At 1 am Wednesday the stage was 14.6 feet and rising.
* Moderate flooding is occurring and record flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 11.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise to a crest near 16.1 feet around 7
am Thursday February 22 and begin falling.

The Flood Warning continues for
the Saint Joseph River Michigan at South Bend
* until further notice.
* At 7 am Tuesday the stage was 6.0 feet and rising.
* Minor flooding is occurring and record flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 5.5 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise to a crest near 12.1 feet around 7
am Thursday February 22 and begin falling.

The National Weather Service in northern Indiana has issued a

* Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in...
Elkhart County in North Central Indiana...
St. Joseph County in North Central Indiana...
northern Kosciusko County in North Central Indiana...
Starke County in northwestern Indiana...
LaGrange County in northeastern Indiana...
Marshall County in North Central Indiana...
La Porte County in northwestern Indiana...
Cass County in southwestern Michigan...
St. Joseph County in southwestern Michigan...

* until 1145 PM EST Thursday/1045 PM CST Thursday/

* Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated that heavy rain
was falling over the area. The heavy rain will cause flooding.
Between 3 and 7 inches of rain have fallen since early Monday
morning.

* Numerous roads are closed due to high water within the warning
area. Nearly all streams... creeks and rivers are in flood or will
flood, some at record levels. Anyone living in a low lying area or
locations prone to flooding should move to higher ground if you
have not already done so. Be prepared for high water on roads and
do not attempt to drive through these areas. Find alternate routes
and stay on main roads if possible. Flooding is difficult to see
at night! Flood waters will be slow to recede and it may take
several days in some locations.


Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is
harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

... A Flood Warning for small streams for rain and snowmelt remains in
effect until 315 am EST Wednesday for LaGrange... Cass... St. Joseph
and Berrien counties...

At 416 PM EST, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated
very heavy rainfall has occurred across the warned area with 1 to
locally as much as 3 inches of rain reported. Rapid snowmelt is also
occurring and will add to the flooding. An additional 1 to 2 inches
of rain is expected across the area which will likely cause
additional or more widespread flooding in some areas, especially
along rivers, creeks and streams.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All
interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.

... Flood Watch remains in effect through this afternoon...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of northern Indiana, southwest Michigan, and
Northwest Ohio, including the following areas, in northern
Indiana, Adams, Allen in, Blackford, Cass in, De Kalb,
Elkhart, Fulton in, Grant, Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, La
Porte, LaGrange, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Pulaski, St. Joseph
in, Starke, Steuben, Wabash, Wells, white, and Whitley. In
southwest Michigan, Berrien, branch, Cass mi, Hillsdale, and
St. Joseph mi. In Northwest Ohio, Allen OH, Defiance, Fulton
OH, Henry, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert, and Williams.

* Through this afternoon

* 1 to 2 inches of additional rain is expected across the watch
area, with heaviest amounts expected along and west of
Interstate 69. Locally higher amounts are possible. Flooding of
streams, creeks and rivers may develop.

* The Flood Watch has been discontinued in areas under an areal
Flood Warning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

If you live along streams and rivers or in any flood prone area,
remain alert to this flooding potential the next several days.
