Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 3:48 PM MDT Jun. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Riverton has extended the

* Flood Warning for...
snowmelt in...
central Fremont County in central Wyoming...

* until 530 PM MDT Saturday

At 339 PM MDT, the Wind River at Crowheart was near 9.9 feet, which
is just below flood stage of 10 feet. The river will likely remain
just below flood stage over the next 10 to 14 hours before rising
again to near flood stage. Below diversion dam river levels are
around 14 inches over flood stage due to high flow out of Bull Lake.
The Wind River at Kinnear is currently at 8.7 feet and slowly
falling. It should continue to slowly fall over the next 2 to 4
hours before rising slowly later this evening and into Saturday
morning as water releases upstream at Bull Lake make it back into
the area. At these levels, water may begin to run across Highway 26
at mile marker 104, 30 miles west of Riverton. Low-lying
agricultural areas will also experience some minor flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All
interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.

... A Flood Warning remains in effect until 1230 PM MDT Saturday for
central Fremont County...

At 400 PM MDT Wednesday, the Wind River near Riverton was around 9.8
feet. Latest projections have the river rising to between 10.3 and
10.5 feet both Thursday morning and Friday morning as snow melt
continues near the headwaters. The river should begin to recede by
Saturday dropping below flood stage of 9.0 feet by early next week.
Extensive agricultural flooding around Riverton and downstream to
near black bridge and Hidden Valley is expected into the weekend.

The little Wind River at Fort Washakie has leveled off around 5.1
feet with little change in the river level since late Monday. Action
stage is 4.5 feet. Downstream at Riverton, the little Wind River
stood at 8.1 feet at 400 PM Wednesday. A slow but steady decline is
anticipated with the river falling below flood stage of 8.0 feet
sometime late Wednesday night. Minor flooding should subside after
this time, with a general decline to follow through the end of the
week for the little Wind River and its tributaries.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Flooding is still occurring along rivers in central Fremont County.
Please stay away from the rivers! The water is swift, cold, and
dangerous. Do not stand on the river bank as the river may have
eroded away the land beneath the bank. Never play, swim, walk, or
drive in flood waters!
