The Flood Warning continues for
the Saint Joseph River Michigan at Niles
* until further notice.
* At 4 PM Wednesday the stage was 16.5 feet and rising.
* Record flooding is occurring and record flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 11.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise to a crest near 16.8 feet around 7
am Thursday February 22 and begin falling.

the Saint Joseph River Michigan at South Bend

* At 2 PM Wednesday the stage was 11.9 feet and rising.
* Record flooding is occurring and record flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 5.5 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise to a crest near 13.0 feet around 1

... A Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams remains in
effect until 1145 PM EST Thursday/1045 PM CST Thursday/ for
Elkhart... St. Joseph... northern Kosciusko... Starke... LaGrange...
Marshall... La Porte... Cass... St. Joseph and Berrien counties...

At 1108 am EST/1008 am CST/, trained weather spotters and many
others reported widespread flooding across the warned area including
much of Northwest Indiana and far southwest lower Michigan. Storm
total rainfall amounts since Sunday evening were generally between 3
and 6 inches with locally 6 to 7 inches around the South Bend area.

Many roads remain closed. Others remain open with water impeding
traffic on one or more lanes. Water rescues due to high water have
been reported since the flooding began. May rivers are approaching
record stages. Please see the individual river forecasts for more
detailed information. Water was encroaching on many homes and some
businesses.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
South Bend, Elkhart, Mishawaka, Goshen, Michigan City, La Porte,
Warsaw, Niles, Sturgis, Benton Harbor, Plymouth, St. Joseph, Three
Rivers, Nappanee, Dowagiac, Westville, Winona Lake, Bremen, Buchanan
and Knox.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become
unstable and unsafe.
