Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 9:15 AM PST Dec. 10, 2016 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a

* Flood Warning for small streams in...
southern Washoe County in western Nevada...

* until 315 PM PST Saturday

* at 910 am PST, spotters and law enforcement in the Mogul area have
reported flooding. Flooding is occurring near drainage ditches and
poorly drained urban areas. Two to three inches of rain have
already fallen with an additional half to one inch possible though
12 PM.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Verdi and Mogul.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will
cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways,
streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low
lying spots.

Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 8:11 AM PST Dec. 10, 2016 – National Weather Service

... The Flood Advisory for rapid rises remains in effect until 1245 PM
PST for alpine... El Dorado... Placer... Sierra... Nevada... southern
Washoe... and Douglas counties and western Carson City...

At 801 am PST, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain from an
atmospheric river continues with snow levels hovering near 8000
feet. Several creeks along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe and on the
west side of Reno are rising rapidly.

At this time the areas of highest concern for minor flooding are
near Blackwood creek, Ward creek and Donner creek in the Lake Tahoe
area. Hunter Creek on the west side of Reno is also rising rapidly
and may exceed it banks this morning.

Rock slides have also occurred on I-80 between Donner Pass and Verdi.
Motorists are urged to use caution and reduce speed while
traveling today.

Heavy rain in the advisory area will continue through at least 10 am.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

... Wind Advisory now in effect until 4 PM PST this afternoon...

The Wind Advisory is now in effect until 4 PM PST this afternoon.

* Timing: strong and gusty winds will develop this morning through
Saturday afternoon.

* Winds: southwest 15 to 30 mph with gusts 50 to 60 mph. Wind
prone locations may see gusts up to 70 mph.

* Pyramid lake: southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with periodic gusts
as high as 55 mph. Wave heights 3 to 5 feet.

* Dangerous conditions expected on the Lake. Small boats, kayaks
and paddle boards will likely capsize and should remain off lake
waters until conditions improve.

* Impacts: winds may cause travel difficulties especially for
high profile vehicles with the worst conditions expected
along the Highway 95 corridor. Winds will also cause
turbulence and wind shear for aviation.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, Holiday
decorations, and trash cans before winds increase which could blow
these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time
by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights
with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power
outage.
