Issued: 9:56 PM EDT Apr. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday evening...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of North Carolina and upstate South Carolina,
including the following areas, in North Carolina, Alexander,
Avery, Buncombe, Burke mountains, Cabarrus, Caldwell
mountains, Catawba, Cleveland, Davie, eastern McDowell,
eastern Polk, Gaston, Graham, greater Burke, greater Caldwell,
greater Rutherford, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Lincoln,
Macon, Madison, McDowell Mountains, Mecklenburg, Mitchell,
northern Jackson, Polk mountains, Rowan, Rutherford mountains,
southern Jackson, Swain, Transylvania, Union, and Yancey. In
upstate South Carolina, Cherokee, Chester, Laurens,
Spartanburg, Union, and York.

* Through Monday evening

* several periods of showers with embedded thunderstorms are
expected across the area through at least Monday morning.
Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are expected by the
time the heavy rain ends on Monday, which could bring totals in
some areas near the Interstate 77 corridor to near 6 inches for
the entire event. Locally higher amounts will be possible with
smaller scale bands of showers and thunderstorms that repeatedly
develop over any one area.

* The long duration and widespread nature of the heavy rain threat
is expected to result in significant rises and likely flooding
on areas streams and creeks. Minor flooding will also be
possible along some main Stem rivers, particularly the South
Fork Catawba river. Additionally, heavier short term rainfall
rates associated with bands of heavy rain showers and embedded
thunderstorms could result in localized flash flooding along
small streams and in urban areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Special Statement
Issued: 1:54 AM EDT Apr. 24, 2017 – National Weather Service

At 148 am EDT, Doppler radar was tracking moderate to heavy rain
showers moving north around the Interstate 77 corridor. Stream
gauges across the Charlotte Metro area are beginning to rise and
some areas could see minor flooding over the next few hours. This
area will be watched for possible flood advisories or warnings
through the morning.

Locations to be impacted include...
Gastonia, Rock Hill, Uptown Charlotte, Huntersville, Kannapolis,
downtown Concord, Monroe, Chester, central Charlotte and south
Charlotte.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

The combination of gusty winds and saturated soil conditions will
cause scattered trees and power lines to fall. Seek shelter inside an
interior room.

Torrential rainfall may flood areas with poor drainage, such as
ditches and underpasses. Avoid these areas and do not cross flooded
roads. Water levels of small streams may also rise rapidly. Seek
higher ground if threatened by flood waters. Do not drive across
flooded roads.
