Watches & Warnings

High Surf Warning, Coastal Flood Advisory
Issued: 10:20 PM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High surf warning remains in effect until 6 am PST Sunday...
... Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect from 3 am Saturday to
6 am PST Sunday...

* coastal flooding... a combination of large wave runup and high
tide early Saturday morning will lead to an increased risk of
minor coastal flooding of low lying areas such as beach
parking lots and campgrounds.

* Surf... surf will build to 10 to 16 feet by through Saturday.
The surf will slowly diminish Sunday through Tuesday... but will
remain above high surf thresholds.

* Impacts... the large surf will likely cause additional beach
erosion and could potentially damage coastal structures... such
as piers. Strong rip currents that will create a risk of ocean
drowning. Sneaker waves can suddenly overrun previously dry
beaches and jetties. Minor coastal flooding of beach parking
lots... walkways and campgrounds is possible... especially
around the times of high tide.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remember... swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current
remain calm. Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction
following the shoreline. When out of the current... swim back to
shore. If tired... float or tread water until out of the rip
current. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help.

A high surf warning means that large and battering surf could
damage coastal structures and will make swimming and rock jetties
very dangerous.

Remember... if caught in a rip current... swim parallel to shore
until you are free of the powerful current. Always swim near a
lifeguard.

A coastal Flood Advisory means that minor and shallow flooding is
occurring or imminent. Avoid low-lying coastal areas... especially
during high tides.

Wind Advisory
Issued: 9:04 PM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 am PST Saturday...

* winds and timing... west winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts between 40
and 50 mph will continue through late tonight.

* Impacts... gusty winds will make driving difficult... especially
for drivers of high profile vehicles. Since the soils are
wet... there is a heightened potential for downed trees.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

When driving... use extra caution. Be prepared for sudden gusty
cross winds.

Small Craft Advisory... which is in effect until noon PST
Saturday. The Gale Warning has been cancelled.

conditions.
