Coastal Hazard Statement, High Surf Advisory
Issued: 3:37 AM EDT Mar. 24, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect through this evening...
... High surf advisory now in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued both a high
surf advisory and a high rip current risk through this evening.

* Waves and surf... large breaking waves of 5 to 7 feet will
continue along the East Coast beaches today.

* Timing... high surf along the coast will continue through this
evening.

* Impacts... large breaking waves will make entering the surf very
dangerous today and may cause minor beach erosion... especially
at times of high tide.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions.

There is a high risk of rip currents today. Rip currents are
powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore... which
occur most often at low spots or breaks in The Sandbar and in the
vicinity of structures such as jetties and piers. Heed the advice
of lifeguards... beach patrol flags and signs.

If you decide to enter the dangerous surf, only swim near a
lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm. Don't fight the
current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable
to escape... face the shore and call or wave for help. If tired,
float or tread water until out of the rip current.
