Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:03 PM EDT Mar. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk remains in effect through Friday
evening...

* timing... through Friday evening.

* Impacts... strong and dangerous rip currents are forecast along
the Atlantic beaches of South Florida, which will be hazardous
for those in the surf zone.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.

Special Statement
Issued: 5:23 PM EDT Mar. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Significant weather advisory for frequent to excessive lightning,
small hail and 45 to 55 mph winds for eastern Palm Beach County until
600 PM EDT...

* at 522 PM EDT... Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm
over Riviera Beach, moving southwest at 30 mph.

* The primary impacts will be frequent to excessive lightning, gusty
winds from 45 to 55 mph, small hail, torrential downpours, or a
combination of these are possible. Lightning is the number one
weather related killer in Florida. Trees and open shelters offer no
protection. These winds can down small tree limbs and branches, and
blow around unsecured small objects. Seek shelter in a safe
building until the storm passes.

* Locations impacted include...
West Palm Beach, Wellington, Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Lake
Worth, Riviera Beach, Palm Beach, Greenacres, Royal Palm Beach,
Palm Springs, Lake Park, Atlantis, Haverhill, Cloud Lake,
Loxahatchee NWR, Palm Beach International Airport, Golden Lakes,
North County Airport, Loxahatchee Groves and lion country safari
park.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead
to street flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

This activity was also developing in an environment favorable for the
formation of funnel clouds. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and
local media for additional updates and possible warnings.
