The area of storminess, previously known as Invest 99-L that we were monitoring for days, finally developed into Tropical Depression Nine near the Florida Keys on Sunday evening.

There remains a large degree of uncertainty around how much this system will strengthen once it gets into the southeast Gulf of Mexico. For now, the clockwise flow around upper-level high pressure over the eastern United States will steer Tropical Depression Nine west-northwest toward the Gulf. That high will weaken by Tuesday, allowing this system to move more north, and then eventually northeast the next several days on a path toward the Florida Gulf Coast.

Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:15 AM EDT Aug. 28, 2016 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect through Monday evening...

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a high rip
current risk... which is in effect through Monday evening.

* Timing... through Monday evening

* impacts... rough surf and rip currents will create dangerous
conditions for swimmers.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.
