Watches & Warnings

Excessive Heat Watch
Issued: 9:45 PM PDT Oct. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Excessive heat watch remains in effect from Monday morning
through Tuesday evening...

* temperature... daytime highs between 98 and 106. Nighttime lows
in windy areas will remain in the 70s.

* Impacts... heat related illness is likely for those involved in
strenuous outdoor activity, or those with health conditions
that do not have adequate access to air conditioning. If
untreated, heat illness events could be fatal. Never leave
children or pets inside a parked car!

* Outlook... gradual cooling will likely occur Wednesday and
Thursday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat watch means that a prolonged period of very
high temperatures is expected. The very hot weather will create a
dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink
plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 9:26 PM PDT Oct. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect through Sunday
evening...

* waves and surf... 3 to 6 ft through Sunday.

* Timing... building northwest swell will bring a more elevated
surf this afternoon through Sunday.

* Impacts... increased risk of ocean drowning from elevated surf
and strong rip currents. Rip currents can pull swimmers and
surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can wash people off
jetties and rocks... and capsize small boats near shore.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.

Fire Weather Watch
Issued: 9:47 PM PDT Oct. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning
through Tuesday afternoon for strong gusty winds and low
humidity...

* location... Orange County coast, San Diego County valleys,
mountain slopes and foothills, and the Riverside County
coastal mountain slopes.

* Wind... areas of east to northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with
gusts 25 to 35 mph.

* Humidity... daytime minimums around 10 percent Sunday, then 5
to 10 percent Monday and Tuesday. Poor recovery each night,
especially in the wind prone locations.

* Timing... Sunday morning through Tuesday.

* Outlook... winds should weaken Wednesday with some improvement
in humidity.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions
are forecast to occur. A combination of strong winds, low
relative humidity and hot weather can contribute to extreme fire
behavior. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag
warnings.
