High Wind Warning
Issued: 2:50 AM MST Feb. 28, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High Wind Warning remains in effect from 10 am this morning to
7 PM MST this evening...

* location... Guadalupe, Quay, Curry, Roosevelt and De Baca
counties and the Chaves County plains.

* Winds... west to southwest at 30 to 45 mph with gusts of 55 to 70
mph.

* Timing... winds will increase rapidly through the remainder of
the morning, peak from midday through the afternoon, then
diminish in the evening.

* Visibility... could be reduced to 1 mile in blowing dust.

* Local impacts... drivers of vans, campers, trailers, and other
high-profile vehicles should be prepared for these potentially
dangerous high winds, especially on north to south oriented
highways, including U.S. Highways 285, 84 and 54. Motorists in
high profile vehicles should consider delaying travel.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remember, a High Wind Warning means damaging winds are imminent
or highly likely. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or
gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

Fire Weather Warning
Issued: 3:04 AM MST Feb. 28, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Red flag warning remains in effect from 11 am CST /10 am MST/
this morning to 7 PM CST /6 PM MST/ this evening for relative
humidity of 15 percent or less, 20 foot winds of 20 mph or more,
and very high fire danger...

* wind... 20 to 40 mph in lower elevations. 30 to 45 mph in the
mountains.

* Humidity... 7 to 15 percent.

* Fire danger... extreme.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

This is a dangerous fire weather situation. Strong winds and very
low relative humidities combined with todays above normal
temperatures resulting in weather conditions favorable for fires
that may be difficult to control. In the past, weather patterns
like this have resulted in the multiple occurrence of large
fires.
