Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 3:04 AM EDT Apr. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect from 8 am EDT this morning
through this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a high rip
current risk, which is in effect from 8 am EDT this morning
through this evening.

* Timing... strong rip currents will occur all day but the
greatest chance will occur between 9 am and 3 PM due to tidal
effects.

* Impacts... life threatening rip currents are likely. The surf
zone will be dangerous to all levels of swimmers.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol flags and
signs.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.
