... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 4 PM this afternoon to
1 PM EST Saturday...
* locations... much of north and parts of west central Georgia...
generally north of a line from Hamilton to Forsyth to
Washington. This includes Atlanta and Athens.
* Hazard types... a mixture of snow... sleet and freezing rain.
* Snow accumulations... 2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts.
* Ice and sleet accumulations... up to 1/4 inch with locally higher
amounts... especially between I-85 and I-20... south and west of
Atlanta.
* Timing... rain mixed with sleet and freezing rain will overspread
the area late this afternoon into early this evening. The
precipitation will begin to change over to snow and sleet this
evening... becoming mainly snow overnight.
* Impacts... roads... including bridges and overpasses... will become
slick making travel extremely hazardous... especially late
tonight into early Saturday morning. In bands of heavy snow...
visibilities will be reduced to less than 1/2 mile. Travel
could quickly become dangerous. Exercise extreme caution if
travel is necessary.
* Winds... becoming northwest winds at 15 to 25 mph with gusts to
30 mph late tonight and Saturday.
* Wind chills and temperatures... temperatures will fall into the
25 to 30 range overnight. This combined with the gusty winds
will drop wind chill values into the 10 to 20 degree range
overnight into Saturday morning.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow... sleet
and ice are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food...
and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Strong winds
are also possible... which will also make travel very hazardous or
impossible.
