Watches & Warnings

Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 2:57 PM EDT May. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 2 am EDT Wednesday...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of northeast Georgia, North Carolina, and upstate
South Carolina, including the following areas, in northeast
Georgia, Elbert, Franklin, Hart, and Stephens. In North
Carolina, Alexander, Burke mountains, Cabarrus, Caldwell
mountains, Catawba, Cleveland, Davie, eastern McDowell,
eastern Polk, Gaston, greater Burke, greater Caldwell, greater
Rutherford, Henderson, Iredell, Lincoln, McDowell Mountains,
Mecklenburg, Polk mountains, Rowan, Rutherford mountains,
Transylvania, and Union. In upstate South Carolina, Abbeville,
Anderson, Cherokee, Chester, greater Greenville, greater
Oconee, greater Pickens, Greenville mountains, Greenwood,
Laurens, Oconee mountains, Pickens mountains, Spartanburg,
Union, and York.

* Until 2 am EDT Wednesday

* additional waves of moderate to heavy rain showers, with a few
embedded thunderstorms, will cross the foothills and Piedmont of
the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia through early
evening. Additional rainfall amounts up to an inch will be
possible, but embedded thunderstorms may result in locally
heavier amounts.

* Due to the widespread rain that has fallen over much of this
area since the past weekend, the ground is near saturation and
stream levels are already running above normal. It will not take
much additional rainfall to produce flash flooding along smaller
creeks and streams. Main Stem rivers and their associated
tributaries will also rise gradually, and some minor flooding
will be possible along these streams by mid-week.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
