Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:21 AM EDT Mar. 25, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect through this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a high rip
current risk, which is in effect through this evening.

* Timing... a high risk for dangerous rip currents will be present
through the day today; however, it will be greatest between
11:00 am and 2:00 PM due to tidal influences.

* Impacts... rough surf and a high risk for rip currents will make
entering the surf dangerous today.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol flags and
signs.

If you choose to enter the weater, only do so near near a
lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm. Don't fight the
current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable
to escape... face the shore and call or wave for help. If tired,
float or tread water until out of the rip current.
