Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory, Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 9:56 AM EST Dec. 10, 2016 – National Weather Service

... The Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory remains in effect until
1045 am EST for southeastern Broward County...

At 930 am EST, city of Hollywood emergency management reported heavy
rain causing urban flooding in eastern portions of Hollywood. 3 to 4
inches of rain have fallen and several roads have standing water on
them.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Hollywood, Hallandale, Dania beach and West Park.

Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected over the area. This
additional rain will make minor flooding. As low tides nears,
drainage of coastal areas should improve helping relieve urban
flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.

... High rip current risk in effect through Sunday evening...

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a high rip
current risk, which is in effect through Sunday evening.

* Timing... today through Sunday.

* Impacts... life threatening rip currents are likely.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.
