Watches & Warnings

Flash Flood Watch, Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 5:26 AM AST Jul. 31, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Flash Flood Watch now in effect through Monday afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues in effect for

* Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

* Through Monday afternoon

* a strong tropical wave will move across the local islands
today... tonight and tomorrow. Showers and thunderstorms are
expected to increase this morning and spread across the rest of
the region through tonight. The most active period appears to be
from this morning through Monday morning.

* The potential of flooding rains is high for Puerto Rico and
the U.S. Virgin Islands on Sunday. Rainfall totals between 2
and 4 inches with locally higher amounts are possible with
this strong tropical wave. Localized flash flooding and
landslides are likely in areas of persistent heavy rainfall.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

... High rip current risk in effect through late tonight...

The National Weather Service in San Juan has issued a high rip
current risk... which is in effect through late tonight.

* Location... beaches of Puerto Rico (except western Puerto rico),
Culebra, Vieques and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

* Timing... through at least tonight.

* Impacts... strong currents may drag swimmers out to sea.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
