Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 5:58 AM PST Jan. 17, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect from late Wednesday
night through Monday evening...

* hazards... a large long period west to northwest swell will
bring high surf to area beaches late Wednesday night through
Monday... with much larger... damaging surf likely late Friday
through Saturday. Surf of 10 to 15 feet Thursday and Friday
may build to 20 to 30 feet late Friday and Saturday...
potentially the highest surf event seen in recent years. The
surf will begin to subside Sunday into Monday... but is
expected to remain above high surf thresholds.

* Impacts... large... powerful and potentially damaging surf will
create dangerous ocean conditions. Coastal erosion will be
likely with potential coastal flooding and damage to coastal
structures such as piers. Frequent strong rip currents and
long- shore currents are expected. Much larger waves may occur
without warning... which can wash people off their feet in the
surf zone or off of rocks and jetties. West- facing Harbor
entrances such as morro Harbor may see breaking waves across
the entrance.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf outlook is issued when high surf is expected to
affect beaches in the advisory area... producing rip currents and
the potential for beach erosion.

If you do not have to be in the water... stay on the shore. Stay
off rocks and jetties and away from the Waters Edge to avoid
being swept away by larger waves... which may occur without
warning. Never turn your back to the ocean.
