Tropical Depression Nine was centered about 170 miles west-southwest of Key West, Florida, as of late Monday morning. The depression may struggle a bit in the southern Gulf of Mexico before finally making a Gulf Coast landfall later this week with soaking rain and gusty winds.

This latest system was designated a tropical depression Sunday after a Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance mission finally found a sufficiently organized low-pressure center with collocated shower and thunderstorm activity.

Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:42 PM EDT Aug. 29, 2016 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk now in effect through Tuesday morning...

* timing... through Tuesday morning.

* Impacts... rough surf and rip currents will continue create
dangerous conditions for swimmers.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired... float or tread water until out of the rip
current.
