Watches & Warnings

Excessive Heat Warning
Issued: 3:12 PM EDT Jul. 22, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Excessive heat warning now in effect until 7 PM EDT Sunday...
... Excessive heat watch is cancelled...

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued an excessive
heat warning, which is in effect until 7 PM EDT Sunday.

* Heat index values... 110 to 115 degrees this afternoon and again
Sunday. Actual highs around 100 both days. Lows tonight around
80.

* Timing... heat index values will climb above 105 degrees early
afternoon, topping out at 110 to 115 late afternoon and again
Sunday afternoon. Temperatures will be slow to fall through the
80s overnight, and may stay above 80 in the urban areas.

* Impacts... the heat and humidity will likely cause heat stress
during outdoor exertion or extended exposure. The long duration
of temperatures remaining above 80 at night combined with
afternoon heat index values of 110 make this a very dangerous
heat event.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation
in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay
in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on
relatives and neighbors. Fans are essential for those without air
conditioning.

Take extra precautions... if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of
minutes. Bring pets indoors if possible, even if for just short
periods of time; and ensure they have access to drinking water,
which can evaporate from dishes very quickly in extreme heat.
