Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 1:09 PM AKDT Jul. 28, 2016 – National Weather Service

... The Flood Advisory remains in effect until 245 PM akdt Friday for
the chena river upstream of nordale Road...

The chena river east of nordale Road remains near bankfull with
minor flooding in some locations. From the Moose Creek dam
downstream the chena river will remain high through Friday as water
slowly drains out from behind the dam.

In the Steamboat Landing subdivision in North Pole... water levels
are expected to remain at minor flood stage through Friday.
Several inches of water will continue to cross Freeman Road. River
water will inundate some yards in the subdivision... and groundwater
flooding will occur in some basements.

The U.S. Army corps of engineers Alaska district is currently
operating the Moose Creek dam. Flood control gates at the dam
started regulating the chena river at 6:00 PM on 20 July 2016.
The dam will be regulating the chena river so that flow does not
exceed 12000 cubic feet per second in downtown Fairbanks.
Groundwater will rise to near the ground surface for several
thousand feet west of the Moose Creek dam with minor flooding
possible. River navigation through the Moose Creek dam is
unavailable during operations.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

Special Statement
Issued: 1:40 PM AKDT Jul. 28, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Heavy rainfall for middle Tanana Valley Friday and Saturday...

A weather system is expected to move across northern Alaska and will
bring periods of rain to the middle Tanana Valley beginning Friday
and continuing through Saturday evening. The heaviest rainfall
with this system is expected Friday morning through Friday
evening.

Widespread rainfall amounts 1 to 1.5 inches will be possible with
locally heavier amounts in upslope areas. There continues to be
some model uncertainty in location of the heaviest rainfall... but
there is model consensus that heavy rainfall can be expected over
the Chatanika... chena and little chena river basins.

Water levels on small streams and rivers will remain high due to
recent heavy rains. With more rain on the way... water levels on
small streams and rivers will increase to bankfull levels and
remain high through the weekend.

The Flood Advisory for the chena river upstream of nordale Road
continues as the chena river remains near bankfull with some
minor flooding ongoing. River levels will continue to fall... but
are expected to increase this weekend with more rain on the way.
