Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 3:49 PM HST Dec. 4, 2016 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a

* Flood Advisory for...
the island of Hawaii in Hawaii County

* until 645 PM HST

* at 345 PM HST... radar indicated heavy rain over the puna and south
Hilo districts. A rain gage near Pahoa town also recorded rain
rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Radar showed more rainfall
heading toward The Big Island from the south.

* Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to...
Hilo... Hawaiian Paradise Park... Honomu... Keaau... Pahoa...
Pepeekeo... Glenwood... Hawaiian acres... Mountain View... Volcano...
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and orchidland estates.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Stay away from streams... drainage ditches and low lying areas prone
to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due
to ponding... reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle... or on
foot. Turn around... don't drown.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 645 PM HST if heavy rain
persists.

A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for The Big Island through
tonight.

... Flash Flood Watch now in effect through late tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for

* Kahoolawe... Lanai... Maui... Molokai... Oahu and The Big Island.

* Through tonight

* the combination of deep tropical moisture and an unstable
airmass will allow for the potential for heavy showers and
thunderstorms from Oahu to The Big Island.

* Heavier downpours and thunderstorms could cause streams to
quickly overflow their banks... leading to flash flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is very dangerous.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued. Campers and hikers should
consider postponing their Outing until the weather is better.
High streams... as well as streams overflowing their banks... could
make conditions very dangerous.
