Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 4:40 PM HST Aug. 23, 2016 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a

* Flood Advisory for...
the island of Hawaii in Hawaii County

* until 730 PM HST

* at 436 PM HST... radar indicated areas of heavy showers across
leeward Big Island mainly north of Kailua Kona and along windward
and southeast slopes. Heavy showers... some falling at rates of 2
inches per hour... are expected to continue through the evening.

* Locations in the advisory include the entire Big Island.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Stay away from streams... drainage ditches and low lying areas prone
to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due
to ponding... reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle... or on
foot. Turn around... don't drown.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 730 PM HST if heavy rain
persists.

A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until midnight HST
tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* The Big Island.

* Until midnight HST tonight

* deep tropical moisture will continue to produce heavy downpours
and a chance of thunderstorms over The Big Island into tonight.
With the ground already saturated in many areas from heavy rains
during the past couple of days... there will be an elevated risk
for flash flooding. The greatest flood threat for leeward areas
will be during the afternoon and early evening hours. The threat
for flooding will persist longer over windward areas... possibly
requiring the watch to be extended through the night.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is very dangerous.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
