Watches & Warnings

High Surf Warning, Coastal Flood Advisory
Issued: 6:12 AM PST Jan. 21, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High surf warning remains in effect until 6 am PST Sunday...
... Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 am PST
Sunday...

* coastal flooding... a combination of large wave runup and high
tide this morning will lead to an increased risk of minor
coastal flooding of low lying areas such as beach parking lots
and campgrounds.

* Surf... surf of 10 to 15 feet will build to 20 to 30 feet through
today. The surf will slowly diminish Sunday through
Tuesday... but will remain above high surf thresholds.

* Impacts... the large surf will likely cause additional beach
erosion and could potentially damage coastal structures... such
as piers. Strong rip currents that will create a risk of ocean
drowning. Sneaker waves can suddenly overrun previously dry
beaches and jetties. Minor coastal flooding of beach parking
lots... walkways and campgrounds is possible... especially
around the times of high tide each morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf warning means that large and battering surf could
damage coastal structures and will make swimming and rock jetties
very dangerous.

A high surf advisory means that high surf and rip currents will
make swimming and rock jetties dangerous.

Remember... swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current
remain calm. Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction
following the shoreline. When out of the current... swim back to
shore. If tired... float or tread water until out of the rip
current. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help.

A coastal Flood Advisory means that minor and shallow flooding is
occurring or imminent. Avoid low-lying coastal areas... especially
during high tides.

Wind Advisory
Issued: 9:41 AM PST Jan. 21, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Wind Advisory in effect from 2 am to 2 PM PST Sunday...

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued a
Wind Advisory... which is in effect from 2 am to 2 PM PST Sunday.

* Winds... south winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph are
expected to develop later tonight and continue through Sunday.

* Impacts... gusty winds will make driving difficult... especially
for drivers of high profile vehicles. Since the soils are
wet... there is a heightened potential for downed trees and power
lines.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

When driving, use extra caution. Be prepared for sudden gusty
cross winds.

Small Craft Advisory, Gale Warning
Issued: 2:14 PM PST Jan. 21, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 9 PM PST this
evening...
... Gale Warning remains in effect from 9 PM this evening to noon
PST Sunday...

* winds... south winds 25 to 35 kt with gusts to 45 kt are
expected when winds are strongest.

* Seas... combined seas of 23 to 26 feet with periods around 17
seconds are expected when waves are largest.

See the coastal waters forecast (cwflox) for more details.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Gale Warning means winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or
occuring. Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires
experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly
recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe
Harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.

A Small Craft Advisory means that hazardous sea conditions will
exist for small craft. Inexperienced mariners... especially those
operating smaller vessels should avoid navigating in these
conditions.
