Watches & Warnings

Fire Weather Warning
Issued: 1:48 PM PDT Jul. 29, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 9 PM PDT this evening
for thunderstorms and strong outflow winds for portions of
western Nevada and the eastern Sierra...

* affected area... fire zone 273 Mono and eastern alpine counties,
fire zone 450 western Nevada Sierra front and fire zone 459
Mineral and southern Lyon counties.

* Thunderstorms... isolated to scattered dry thunderstorms are
expected to develop this afternoon along the eastern Sierra of
California and the western Nevada Sierra front... pushing
eastward toward Highway 95 by late afternoon or early evening.

* Outflow winds... erratic and sudden wind gusts 35-50 mph are
likely with locally higher gusts possible in the desert areas.

* Impacts... lightning can create new fire starts and may combine
with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in
size and intensity. Erratic outflow winds will also impact
ongoing fires such as the rock fire north of Reno. Outflows
can extend a long distance away from the parent thunderstorm.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry
vegetation... such as yard work... target shooting... or
campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.Gov/Reno
for updates and livingwithfire.Info for preparedness tips.
