Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Watch
Issued: 2:44 PM MDT Mar. 29, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday afternoon...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of central Idaho, eastern Idaho, south central Idaho,
and southeast Idaho, including the following areas, in central
Idaho, big and little Wood River region, Lost
River/pahsimeroi, and Sawtooth Mountains. In eastern Idaho,
upper snake Highlands. In south central Idaho, eastern Magic
Valley. In southeast Idaho, Cache Valley/Idaho portion,
Caribou Highlands, south Central Highlands, and Wasatch
mountains/Idaho portion.

* Through Friday afternoon.

* Excessive snowmelt along with rainfall.

* Above freezing temperatures and moderate to heavy rainfall
tonight through Friday will continue snowmelt across the watch
area. Rain on top of snow will further increase the risk of
runoff and flooding in lower elevations starting tonight and
continuing through Friday.

* Water was beginning to flow over the magic dam spillway with
downstream flows on the Big Wood River across Lincoln County
expected to reach upwards of 5000 cfs around midnight tonight.
At 5300 cfs, floodwaters will spread downstream from the
Reservoir along the Big Wood River reaching within one foot of
Highway 75. The flooding is expected to be similar to the event
that occurred in 2006.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

Individuals living near the Big Wood River downstream of the magic
dam should be alert to possible flooding.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
