Watches & Warnings

Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 3:53 PM MDT Jul. 21, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until midnight MDT
tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of Colorado and Utah, including the following areas,
in Colorado, Animas river basin, central Colorado River Basin,
central Gunnison and Uncompahgre river basin, central Yampa
river basin, debeque to Silt corridor, Elkhead and park
mountains, Flat Tops, Four Corners/upper Dolores river, Gore
and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain valleys, Grand Valley,
grand and battlement mesas, lower Yampa river basin, northwest
San Juan Mountains, Paradox Valley/lower Dolores river, Roan
and tavaputs plateaus, San Juan river basin, southwest San
Juan Mountains, Uncompahgre Plateau and Dallas Divide, upper
Gunnison River Valley, upper Yampa river basin, and west Elk
and sawatch mountains. In Utah, arches/Grand Flat,
canyonlands/Natural Bridges, eastern Uinta Basin, eastern
Uinta Mountains, La Sal and Abajo Mountains, southeast Utah,
and tavaputs plateau.

* Until midnight MDT tonight

* scattered to numerous thunderstorms, some with heavy rain, are
expected over the watch area, developing by this afternoon and
continuing through late this evening.

* Flash flooding due to heavy rainfall is possible, especially
over already saturated soils and areas of steep terrain. Slot
canyons, burn scars, and normally dry streams, washes and
arroyos are most susceptible to flash flooding. Water can rise
quickly downstream of heavy rain, even when a thunderstorm is
miles away. Rock and mud slides, and high water flowing across
roads, are also possible which could impact travel.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
