Record highs are possible for parts of the Northeast Monday and Tuesday, as parts of the central U.S. take a little breather from the worst of summer's dog day heat.

Expansive high pressure in the upper atmosphere will focus on parts of the East and West this week, sending heat indices well into the triple digits from the Mid-Atlantic states into the South.

... Heat and humidity peaking today with afternoon heat indices
100 to 105f...

The recent string of hot and humid weather will be peaking today
as a cold front settles southward toward the Ohio River. Moisture
pooling just south of this front will result in even high humidity
levels than we've seen in recent days. Temperatures this afternoon
will once again climb to around 90 degrees, but when combined with
the very high humidity levels, it will feel more like 100 to 105
degrees for a few hours this afternoon.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are possible in today's
conditions. Practice heat safety if you are working or playing
outdoors. Also, never leave pets or children unattended in
vehicles and check on the elderly, sick and those without air
conditioning.

While it will remain very humid the over the next few days,
increasing showers and thunderstorms should result in slightly
cooler temperatures after today.
