Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 1:15 AM PDT Oct. 19, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect through this
evening...

* hazards... surf heights 3 to 6 feet through this evening. There
will be gusty west winds affecting the Ventura County coast
including Oxnard this afternoon through early evening. The surf
is expected to pile up across the surf zone and bring surf
locally up to 7 feet from McGrath beach to Point Mugu including
Oxnard Shores, Hollywood Beach and silverstrand beach late in
the afternoon through the early evening hours.

* Impacts... there is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip
currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large
breaking waves can wash people off jetties, beaches and
rocks... and capsize small boats near shore.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents... longshore currents... sneaker waves and other hazards
create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Swim near a
lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't
swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following
the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or
wave for help.
