Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 9:28 AM PDT Jun. 24, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect through this
evening...

* hazards... dangerous rip currents and breaking waves are
expected through midnight due to elevated surf of 3 to 5 feet.
Highest surf expected across south facing beaches. An
astronomical large high tide will occur late this evening.

* Tides... abnormally large high tide around 7 feet will occur
this evening around 10 PM PDT.

* Impacts... there is an increased risk for ocean drowning
especially with more people seeking relief from the hot inland
temperatures. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out
to sea. Large breaking waves can wash people off beaches and
rocks and capsize small boats near shore. Abnormal pooling of
sea water is possible around high tide at beaches and harbors.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents... longshore currents... sneaker waves and other hazards
create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Swim near a
lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't
swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following
the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or
wave for help.
