High Surf Advisory, Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:27 AM EDT Mar. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect through this evening...
... High surf advisory in effect from 2 PM this afternoon to 5 am
EDT Friday...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a high surf
advisory, which is in effect from 2 PM this afternoon to 5 am EDT
Friday. A high rip current risk has also been issued. This high
rip current risk is in effect through this evening.

* Waves and surf... building surf will reach 5 to 7 feet along the
coast by mid to late afternoon into this evening and the
pounding waves will continue along the East Coast beaches
tonight. An east northeast swell will also produce a high risk for
rip currents.

* Timing... high surf will develop by mid afternoon into tonight.
There will be a high risk for rip currents today.

* Impacts... large and pounding surf can knock you down or push you
off a sandbar and into deeper water making you susceptible to
being pulled out by a rip current.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions.

There is a high risk of rip currents today. Rip currents are
powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore... which
occur most often at low spots or breaks in The Sandbar and in the
vicinity of structures such as jetties and piers. Heed the advice
of lifeguards... beach patrol flags and signs.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.
