Special Statement
Issued: 8:50 PM EDT Apr. 26, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Smoke will push north from ongoing wildfire...

Smoke from the west Mims wildfire in the Okefenokee National
Wildlife Refuge will continue to impact portions of Ware, Pierce,
Brantley, and Charlton counties into Thursday as winds remain from
the south and southwest. Although smoke may decrease from the
wildfire overnight, smoke may settle toward to the ground early
Thursday morning. Some locations impacted the most will include
Race Pond, Winokur, Hoboken, Folkston, and Waycross. Some low
visibilities from the smoky conditions are expected on area
roadways, generally north of the ongoing large wildfire.
Visibilities in these locations may be reduced to 1 to 3 miles at
times.

Although the general public may not be affected... children,
pregnant women, the elderly, and those that have heart or lung
disease are especially vulnerable to smoke exposure. Fine
particles are respiratory irritants, and exposures to high
concentrations can cause persistent cough, phlegm, wheezing, and
difficulty breathing.
