Issued: 4:12 PM EDT May. 25, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Coastal flood advisory in effect until 10 PM EDT this
evening...
... Beach hazards statement remains in effect until 8 PM EDT this
evening...

The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued
a coastal flood advisory, which is in effect until 10 PM EDT this
evening.

* Hazards... high risk of rip currents and minor Soundside
flooding north of Cape Hatteras.

* Location of rip current risk... south of Rodanthe.

* Coastal flooding... water levels 2 to 3 feet above normal over
the Outer Banks north of Cape Hatteras.

* Timing and tides... the most likely time for strong rip
currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide,
which will occur around 2 PM Thursday.

* Timing of Soundside flooding... late today through this evening.

* Coastal flood impacts... minor Soundside flooding will occur
adjacent the Pamlico Sound north of Cape Hatteras and Roanoke
Island.

* Surf height... 5 to 8 feet south of Rodanthe.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

If caught in a rip current remain calm. Don't fight the current.
Swim in a direction following the shoreline. When out of the
current, swim back to shore. If tired, float or tread water until
out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and
call or wave for help.

A coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
