The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
northeastern Surry County in northwestern North Carolina...
southwestern Floyd County in southwestern Virginia...
southeastern Carroll County in southwestern Virginia...
southwestern Patrick County in southwestern Virginia...

* until 1000 PM EDT

* at 404 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy showers and
thunderstorms lined up from marby mill along the Blue Ridge, south
into the North Carolina Piedmont, moving north at 40 mph. These
heavy showers and storms will train off and on over the same
general area, and cause flaash flooding, especially near the Blue
Ridge.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Mount Airy...
Flat Rock...
Ararat...
Cana...
and Laurel Fork.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of flooding,
including mudslides or flooded roads, to the National Weather Service

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until midnight EDT
tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of North Carolina and Virginia, including the
following areas, in North Carolina, Alleghany NC, Ashe,
Caswell, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and
Yadkin. In Virginia, Bland, Carroll, Grayson, Henry, Patrick,
Smyth, Tazewell, and Wythe.

* Until midnight EDT tonight

* showers and thunderstorms could produce 1 to 2 inches of rain
or locally more in a short period of time this afternoon and
evening. High rainfall rates combined with wet soil conditions
could lead to flash flooding of creeks and streams.

* Flooding of streams and creeks can lead to impassable roads.
Mudslides are possible which would also impact travel.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Remember... turn around... don't drown!

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
