Record highs are possible for parts of the Northeast Monday and Tuesday, as parts of the central U.S. take a little breather from the worst of summer's dog day heat.

Expansive high pressure in the upper atmosphere will focus on parts of the East and West this week, sending heat indices well into the triple digits from the Mid-Atlantic states into the South.

Heat Advisory
Issued: 3:39 AM EDT Jul. 25, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Heat advisory in effect from noon today to 6 PM EDT this
evening...

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a heat
advisory... which is in effect from noon today to 6 PM EDT this
evening.

* Temperatures... highs today will be in the upper 80s.

* Heat index values... approaching 100 during the mid and late
afternoon hours.

* Impacts... the excessive heat will create hazardous conditions.
The potential for heat related health issues will be high...
especially for the elderly and for those already in poor
health.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned
room... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and
neighbors.

Take extra precautions... if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in
vehicles under any circumstances. During warm or hot weather car
interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency... call 9 1 1.
