Issued: 4:08 PM EST Dec. 7, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect from 9 am Thursday
to 7 am EST Friday...

* locations... northern Herkimer and Hamilton counties in the
western Adirondacks.

* Accumulations... snow accumulation of 8 to 14 inches across
northern Herkimer counties. The higher totals will be from
Route 28 and Old Forge northward. Snow accumulation of 6 to 10
inches in western Hamilton County... especially west of
Raquette Lake and north of Route 28.

* Timing... Thursday late morning through Friday mid morning.

* Impacts... heavy lake effect snowbands and gusty winds will
lead to blowing and drifting of snow with near whiteout
conditions. Roads will become snow covered and treacherous to
travel on.

* Winds... west 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

* Temperatures... in the lower to mid 20s.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake-
effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous or
impossible. Lake-effect snow showers typically align themselves
in bands and will likely be intense enough to drop 1 to several
inches of snow per hour for several hours. Visibilities vary
greatly and can drop to zero within minutes. Travel is strongly
discouraged. Commerce could be severely impacted. If you must
travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your
vehicle in case of an emergency.

Special Statement
Issued: 6:19 PM EST Dec. 7, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Patchy black ice possible tonight...

Light winds and some breaks in the cloud cover will allow
temperatures to fall to near or below freezing in most locations
tonight. This... coupled with residual moisture... may allow patchy
black ice to develop this evening and into the overnight hours.

Motorists and pedestrians should be prepared for slippery spots... and
drive or walk with extra caution tonight. Elevated
roadways... Highway on and off ramps... and less traveled secondary
roadways will be most susceptible to potential black ice
formation.
