On the rocks

Had to dig back in my folder for this picture. I have not been getting any interesting pictures lately. Maybe due to the weather.

Good morning YCD.
I have the apps working great but I'm still unable to get it to find the windows shared folders. It could be my firewall on the desktop computer stopping the access. I should take the time to read the android OS manual.

Checked out Kelowna a couple days ago. Looks beautiful. Was waiting for your take on it.

Looking forward to your report.

Hi Ylee:
We have a couple more hours to wait for a two hour ferry ride back to our island.
Missed the last one by about 10 minutes.
The new to us RV is fun and easy to drive. Temperature was just below freezing last night and we had rhe furnace on for a bit and slept comfortably.
Got only a few photos which I'll check out when I'm back to the computer.
There is probably a way to upload directly but I don't know how yet.

Hi, ycd! You on your way back? Somehow "aquired responsibility" sounds more like "aquired headache"!

I'll give you this: you do not lead a boring life!

Good morning:
Sitting in thhe Best Western West Kelowna. Sleet (very light) and just above freezing.
Just waiting for Tloml to wake. Yesterday was a long day: up at 0400 and caught the first ferry then rode about 350 miles to this hotel at about 1730.

Stuck in Kelowna again.
Where is Kelowna? I'll get back to you on that.
Somehow I have aquired responsibility for a 23' RV.

Afternoon BriarCraft:
The better looking logs are on the main road and came down from someone else's property. The mossy old Alder or Maple that came down across our drive shattered where it hit the road and does not look like worthwhile fire wood. In fact one of the neighbors had cleared the road before I even noticed the deadfall. Gunther came for coffee and asked: "Did you clear the road?"
"I didn't know it needed clearing. What came down?"
So there were actually two (or more) deadfalls within less than a mile.
Our local "High Tree" service has been out today cleaning up around the lines with a "man lift" chainsaw operator and another guy feeding the chipper.
The fact is that all overhead lines here are vulnerable to wind driven deadfall and snow laden trees and branches. I think our local power company and sub contractors do a fair job of trying to limit the outages and we have learned to live with the reality:
The power and communications system is fragile.

Did you have to clear the windfall or did the power crew handle that for you? Those trunks look like they were in their prime -- no discolored or pithy wood. At least they'll provide some good lumber and/or firewood.

Tloml is hooked! The Toshiba laptop we found in "Easy Pawn" now sits on the kitchen table and she is watching "Dragon's Den". The fire went out in the furnace so I went down to re ignite it.

Do they expect you to pay attention to their non-flameble adds while struggling to get warm?

Tony:
I lost a post on your blog today which mainly concerned itself with how you and the Tablet are getting along.
I floundered with the iPod for a year or two and now I'm attempting to get to know the Samsung Galaxy. Obviously we old farts will be the last to know this stuff - I just take the machine to one of my grand kids and they sort it out.
Tloml is one of the last combined O.T./P.Therapists qualified from U.B.C. and now works Palliative Home Care.
The last thing I want is her looking after me.
Sorta like responding to a knock on the door and seeing the "Grim Reaper".
Much as I do love her

Yup, finally figured (or actually blundered) through the very simple process: the first screen that comes up when you connect the USB had me worried so I would not "Connect PC to SamGal storage" (or something). Once I went ahead and followed the prompts it worked seamlessly.
SamGal is just a bit touchy when you try to post on blogs or email though. I wrote two long entries - one on Tony's blog and one on here - while smoking on the deck at my daughter's waiting for my helper who never showed and the sleet to taper off. Moved back in to strong wifi signal and lost both comments. Though I can read email in any hot spot I think stuff I send is not being delivered.
One possibility is that I brush the screen somewhere when I move about and the machine goes ahead and does something I did not intend to ask for.

WE don't get the rain you do, so our trees top out at about 70-80 feet.

Did you upload those pics with the Samgal?

The second Windfall photo is the view from the rotten stump end of the big Maple.
This area is infested with "Root Rot" fungus. This old maple died many years ago but stood through many storms since then. It is quite common to see what look like healthy large fir trees blown down and the roots are spongy and weak. Since some of these trees are more than a hundred feet high (or long once they fall down) it is quite the undertaking to clear far enough from your power line or even your house.

Got it Ylee:
The first windfall picture is taken from our driveway. The overhead power and cable lines ran left to right just about where the break in the trunk lies. It certainly would have damaged any overhead wires.

You would think it would ne pretty straightforward to upload the pics; just find where the pics are when prompted!

Can you find the pics?

Hey Rob:
Ain't that the truth. I hate to ask for directions and it drives Tloml around the bend when we are travelling.
Apparently this is quite a common trait of both men and women: Men supposedly refuse to stop and ask for directions and women become furious as they drive around in circles.
In Porto, Portugal we went to the Port Caves and met a fellow who only visited places with a name that started with the letter "P". I did not know or did not tell him that that town is also called "Oporto".
Anyhow he had his grandfather's Army Issue compass and we had a map and a car so we figured we could find our way up the River Duoro.
Tloml took over the navigation (without the Civil War Compass - just the map and her brain and eyes) after she noticed we had passed the same place twice but had not found our way out of town.
I rarely read the instruction manual for a new tool before I try it out but I keep the manual - in fact most of the manuals I have refer to tools that are long ago worn out.

Quoting ycd0108:
Or should that read:
"That's all" she wrote?
I took some pictures of the downed trees that took out the power t'other day but do you think I can remember how I downloaded the other pictures from SamGal?
I know it's possible because I did it once and it seemed easy but now I might even have to read the "Help" section.

I feel for you man.
Life sucks sometimes!

No eye deer where my reply went - Oh yes, Tloml called me down to keep Jupiter from following her down the road. She is off to take grandson to watch grand daughter sing the national anthem at a local hockey game and secondarily to watch the game. I was tempted but I don't give a ---- about hockey unless I know some of the skaters. The grand daughter is somehow arranging more and more of these performances and she's pretty good so I assume there will be others available.
Onward to see if I can successfully post a reply to:
BriarCraft:
Congratulations! And thank you. I know there are good pictures still around but the new to me Samgal will take some getting used to to upload images. I can not remember how I got the Las Vegas photos to load.
Besides that Apple is suing Samsung which seems a pretty silly way to make your living but might affect my connectivity.
As if there were not enough trouble in this world the ultra successful need to have an "Hissey Fit"?
Thank you calpoppy: I salvaged logs which stand or span in this house and a number of other dwellings I worked on. The legalities are not clear but the local log salvagers do not worry unless somebody takes a recently lost log which they could sell to a sawmill.
If a log has been in the chuck for a while it will have been grounded in sand or on the rocks so the mills don't want to damage the saws.

FIRST!!

That's a nice photo, YCD. Good idea to dig out something sunny and scenic at this time of year. Living in a temperate rain forest during the wettest month of the year doesn't provide much camera fodder.
