Will 2013 Hurricane season end up like 2001 and 2002

By: tornadocam, 4:13 PM GMT on September 13, 2013

Earlier this week Humberto became a hurricane barely defending the record as latest formation of a hurricane. 2002's Gustav holds the record of latest hurricane forming in the Atlantic Basin when it became a Hurricane on September 11th 2002. The 2013 Hurricane Season has produced 9 named storms and 1 hurricane, so does this mean the season is going to be below average? The answer is, it is hard to tell. However, August-October is the peak of hurricane season. October is known to produce a lot of tropical systems. Sometimes even November can be active. Their were two seasons that are infamous for late season Hurricanes 2001 and 2002.

The 2001 hurricane season did not produce a hurricane till September when Hurricane Erin formed. But In October and November two late season hurricanes were destructive. Hurricane Iris formed in October reaching category 4 status. Iris devastated Belize. In November Hurricane Michelle made landfall in Cuba as a Category 4 hurricane. In 2002 two infamous hurricanes were destructive. Hurricane Isidore devastated Mexico as a Category 3 hurricane. Hurricane Lili devastated Louisiana costing close to $1 Billion in damages. The 2001 and 2002 Hurricane Seasons had late season hurricanes but they were destructive.

Their have been other notable late season hurricanes over the past few decades.
2012 Hurricane Sandy formed at the end of October. Sandy impacted Cuba and then the Northeastern United States. Sandy caused over 100 deaths and $60 Billion in damages
2010- Hurricane Tomas formed on the last day of October and impacted Grenada and Haiti
2008- Hurricane Paloma a category 4 storm in November was destructive to Cuba
2005-Hurricane Wilma formed in October and has the record of strongest Hurricane when its pressure dropped to 882 milibars. Wilma devastated Mexico and Florida
1999-Lenny a November category 4 storm was destructive to the Lesser Antilles
1998- Hurricane Mitch a Category 5 hurricane formed in October and hammered Honduras claiming over 15,000 lives.

We still have a long way to go before the 2013 Hurricane Season is over. October and even November have proven they can be prime for tropical development. It would not be surprising to see late season Hurricanes in 2013. Will the 2013 Hurricane Season be like 2001 and 2002 that produces late season hurricanes. No one can be sure so it is important to be prepared and remember the Hurricane Season does not end till November 30th.
