Wednesday's Question of the Day

By: ricderr, 12:05 PM GMT on June 11, 2008

Good morning to each and everyone. I think it’s time for a little rambling.

Hello to the late night people who come in and right the ship and put this blog back on topic. Your comments might not get the replies that the morning ones do but they add to the consensus and are still read by many. It’s nice to wake up and see that other people still had an opinion on the topic.

Studies now show that 25 million people are now underinsured. These are not those without any insurance. These are not those on welfare receiving government assistance. These are the working poor, the forgotten people and chances are, they’re people who read this blog. Something must be done as a slowing economy and possible recession will only add to these numbers.

My 8 year old was talking with mom last night as he was heading to bed. He has decided that he wants boobs when he grows up. Oh, he doesn’t want to give up his boy parts as he so aptly called them, but boobs are cool. God help us all. I’m just glad mom got to field this one and I didn’t.

I haven’t talked about the forecasting contest in awhile. I surprised myself by staying in 3rd place overall in the contest after Omaha. As of today Mobal is in first place and Skypony keeps on inching her way up the leader board. Another surprise is CG. If she had started playing from the beginning she would be right there in the thick of things. Who would figure that mere girls, sky and CG could forecast. I wonder though, if the forecasting might be keeping them out of the kitchen too much and they both are neglecting their wifely duties. We might need to call Mr. Sky and Mr. CG.

Yesterday on one of the blogs a stink was made over what a candidate had said about sex education. Now of course, it was typically done with the whole quote conveniently left out and edited to portray the candidate in the worst light from the opposing viewpoint, but it got me to thinking. Has sex education helped? Of course that got me to not just accepting my thoughts as facts and instead perusing for information and I was surprised at what I found out so I thought why not bring it to the table. Now, I’m going to leave the politics out. Once again, you’ve got numerous blogs to share your wisdom of how great you can prove your points and bash your fellow bloggers, this isn’t the venue for it, instead the QOD:

How do you feel sex education should be taught?

The views of the author are his/her own and do not necessarily represent the position of The Weather Company or its parent, IBM.

From the top down
How do you feel sex education should be taught?

Should be taught by the parents when they feel their child is mature enough to understand...It is never anyone else's place (including public schools) to teach your child that part of life because you never know how it will be explained or interpreted...
I know someone is going to say "hands on" so I'll just get it out right now.
But far too often it's not. It's not "taught" at all. Then we leave it up to our children to learn from their peers, at a "gutteral" level.
They learn mis-information, listen to rumors, and ACT on peer pressure.

I understand the religious arguements. But sex education is to important not to be taught in schools.

The health risks alone should tell us that much.
I personally think that its best for the parents to start introducing the basic information to their children at a reasonably early age. Do not give them false facts like "the stork brought you" etc. Kids today are too savvy for that nonsense. Kids are curious by nature and seeing Nature at work they question. Explain simply that its natures way of making babies if they see their pets breeding. Make sure to satisfy their curiosity by keeping it simple. Depending on age, you don't have to go into alot of details.

All kids mature at different levels and only the parent will know when its time to talk to them about the act of sex. Oh and don't wait till they are dating to finally set them down and have THE TALK. By then its a little late as they will already have spoken to their peers about it and may have distorted information on it. Teaching morals and self control is more important.
It is the parents responsability..however...just because you are a parent, that doesn't mean you earned the job so I have no problem with the school showing the puberty tape and then the sex talk. You would be surprised at some of the parents out there that don't or won't talk about sex..or even call their own anatomy by the right name. I would rather have an attempt at education, even if that meant my kid had to sit through some joke of a lecture, then a 13 year old trying to learn it for herself.
Yes, meltemi beat me to it. darn.
you could always send your kid to rics blog on a day when panties are being discussed:))
Sky and Mr. CG.

ROFLMAO!!! Ric, forget your QOD, this is what is going to get you hammered today! LOL Just wait until Skye or Carolina gets here! LOL
How do you feel sex education should be taught?

What's wrong with the current learning system of youngsters being sexually educated by Hollywood and the major TV networks? Never forget the ground breaking steps this country took in the late 80's with such esteemed public Sex Ed professors like 2 Live Crew and N.W.A.

Leisure Suit Larry, where are you now?
Morning Ric.
Ric; I had to chuckle at your son wanting boobs! (Tell him he doesn't want them- they're a drag to haul around!!!) My five year old grand-daughter was recently watching a DVD of WWII vintage cartoons, one being of a cats & dogs college football teams playing a game. At half-time, the cat marching band came out onto the field with a VERY shapely majorette leading it, and she definitely needed better support-wear, because she was bouncing quite obviously. At this moment, my grand-daughter asks; "Grandma, is that a GIRL kitty?" After a few blinks I said; "Yes, it is." She smiled; "I thought so! I could tell because she was wearing lipstick!" Yeah, the lipstick was a reeeeal tip-off.

About the QOD; Ideally, I think the parents should be the one's to teach their kids sex education. But, that said, when my kids were little, our cats were actually the ones to teach them the basic mechanics.... the questions started; "Mommy, is Tigger giving Shadow a piggy-back ride???"
For starters ric, I have to agree with your 8-yr-old. Boobs are cool indeed.

No, I don't think sex education has helped much. I think that by the time they recieve it at home or at school, they've already been indoctrinated by the TV (that's television, not the other thing) music and printd media and seen the whole level of attention our society puts on it. Kids learn morals and aspects of respect from their parents mainly and that can be good or not so good depending on your viewpoint.
How do you feel sex education should be taught?

Ok this will surprise you being the conservative I am. Of course, parents should be their childrens main source of information but as Goo said, some parents are not equiped to handled any type of teaching.

Parents should introduce some of the information and is is ok if another close family member is asked a "question" they can answer...

but I am ok with the schools teaching the basis, like the body parts; the biology of how a baby is formed, about STDs, etc.
I do not want the school to pass out condoms or birth control pills or take children to get abortions. That is the parents or another close adult family friends part. I do not want to school to show films on how to have sex, the different types of sex, etc.

But we do need the schools to do some of the lifting because I know parents will not do the teaching. About a month before I got married (June 1971 the first time right after high school) I came home from school one day with one of my friends, and on my bed was a copy of "All you ever wanted to know about sex but was afraid to ask" was on my bed. About a week later my Mother ask me if I got that books she left me?

That was my Sex Education from my Mother. My Dad's was "You know, when you two spend too much time together it is not a good thing because, you know, human nature is going to take over."

ROFL! Like all of my peers, I learned about sex from my friends and we got our education from all sorts of places that probably wasn't the best! heck I was in high school before I really knew what had to be done to get pregnant. There were al kinds of rumors we learned about getting pregnant! I don't think our kids are in that situation today because of TV and movies that we did not see when I was growing up.
I was in high school before I really knew who to get pregnant

Ha ha ahahahahahaahah. I love it!
My 8 year old was talking with mom last night as he was heading to bed. He has decided that he wants boobs when he grows up.

Do you here that Gypsy?! Ric's 8 year old is already taking to bird watching!

8 years old and the young lad has his priorities straight. That's what I call A1 parenting!
baily, that was a typo I went back and fixed! but the original was funnier! LOL
GFS: boooo hissssss (throwing tomatoes)

Please hold the tomatoes. Haven't heard about the E-Coli breakout? Geez...
and Ric your son's want for Boobs, I can just image my hubby's face if our son had ever asked that question! You guys would over react to that! So glad Becky was around to handle it! LOL
It was salmonela not E-Coli, haha!

Honestly, I'm sitting here wondering just how many of the guys ever used this line...(?)

"If you loved me, you would..."
What's that? Salmon going bad now. Wow.
Morning Ric
How do you feel sex education should be taught?

Regardless of a parents or a schools input, sex education will be taught as it always has been. by nature and God given desires. Having said that I believe both parents and schools can play an important part, which parents should take the lead in.

IMHO
JER
Though I agree that parents should be the ones to teach sex education the sad fact is that some will not be responsible parents. Regardless of why, sex ed. Is and will continue to be taught in our public schools. These facts make me more concerned on what is taught. I for one have taught my children that abstinence is the most effective way to avoid pregnancy and STD’s.
Salmon gone bad, Ebroccoli outbreaks, what does it matter eh tornadofan?

Florida Tomatoes Get the All Clear in the Nationwide Salmonella Outbreak

Health officials continue searching for the source of the outbreak.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008
WIOD Wire Services

The federal government has cleared the state's tomatoes of being the cause of a national food poisoning scare.

Amid a salmonella outbreak linked to raw tomatoes, many fast-food chains and grocery stores have removed or stopped selling them altogether.

State Agriculture Department spokeswoman Liz Compton says a lot of damage has been done already economically to growers, grocers and restaurateurs, but re-emphasized that Florida's tomatoes are safe.

The department is contacting grocers and restaurants to give them the update.

McDonald's, Burger King, Publix, Winn-Dixie, Wal-Mart and several other U.S. chains have stopped selling raw tomatoes.

Federal health officials are trying to trace the source of a salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes that has sickened people in at least 16 states.

The FDA says the outbreak was linked to certain varieties of raw tomatoes including red plum, red Roma and red round.

Cherry, grape, and tomatoes with the vine still attached are considered safe.

How dare you foil one of our only weapons of seduction!!
How do you feel sex education should be taught?

Often, over the course of 70 years.
Hey had I been neglectiong my wifely dudies my pony tail would have smacked you in the face by now. & wasn't I breathing down your neck last week? I know ya'll are setting your clocks & giving it your all. I've rode on alotta 3 & 4 day old forcasts. & for some reason if my forecast isn't in by midnight EDT I have to e-mail it to them. So I try to get them in by midnight. Seattle maybe another PDT setback for me. Mr Sky said it's like the olympics, he also refures to 'cane season as by football season. He's impressed~ thinks perhaps I should go back to school for met when the kids are older. I too noticed CG. Good to get some compitition in the ladies division:)

I think some sex ed in junior high is a good thing. If you were gonna cover it at home, these days, better getter done before then anyhow.
I was in fourth grade when my mom sat me down and drew me diagrams, explaining exactly how these things worked and how it was possible to get pregnant despite all the myths and things that boys tell you. I walked away wide-eyed, but at least I knew the facts. She also said to me, "It's your uterus, it's YOUR responsibility to protect it. Do NOT rely or depend on anyone else to make sure YOU don't get pregnant." I think that's some of the best advice I've ever heard.
I remember seeing some diagrams about the time I was in fourth grade too. I don't think anybody's mother drew them though.
I think that teaching kids about sex should be a job for the parents. With that being said, I don't think that a lot of parents are taking on this task (big shocker, I know), which means that it has to be taught by someone else... the public school system maybe? Whoever and whereever, they need to be educated early.

Here is the problem: kids are going to eventually be "getting it on" with eachother and I would much rather them well educated and safe than the alternative.
How dare you foil one of our only weapons of seduction!!

Who says you guys were the ones doing the seducing
Melt..I remember my dad giving my brothers condoms..telling them not to be stupid..They thought it was so cool.

I really can't pinpoint when I actually was taught on the subject. I figured it out naturally I guess. In the company of my fellow friends, braging and lying about how far we've gotten. In the privacy of the bushes with the girl next door. In the classroom with blushing 40 year old female teachers. In the stellar articles in publications like Playboy when you happen to accidentally put one in your backpack with your friends.

I don't think much has changed in 7 million years of evolution except culture and customs. If anything has changed dramatically, its the sanctity of sex. The natural common bond between male and female has become polarized and miscrewed.

Sexual education is more of a warning now to be careful and be safe. The more sciencific and businesslike we try to make sex, the emotional attachment fades, at least in this modern western lifestyle. Love becomes a disconnect, and all the education in the world can not stop that.
Ric… I got you tied in Seattle :)… and if it makes you feel better my son was walking around this weekend trying to give himself a “crack in his boobies’ (cleavage) He decided you don’t get boobie cracks ‘till you get OLD… you know like I am ;)

Ha Gamma… I go some cheesy book called the stork is dead…. Only it was missing pages… I think my mom pulled out the good ones :)
Boobs are only cool untill the first time you slam on in the car door
slam one in the car door, sorry can't modify to fix my typos
Who says you guys were the ones doing the seducing

hehehe I love it when PB shows up
gypsy- did you switch browsers or get a browser upgrade recently?
YES you did gyp....but..it looks like i nailed the low of 48 this morning..whoohoo...let me gain some on the leaders....and..i popped a zero chance of precip..and i've been watching showers pop up all around the airport this morning...still looking good.but oh so close...

now as for kyle i take more of what he said last night..not that he wants boob..but that he's noticing the feminine persuasion...which as a parent...should tell me..when the questions come..it's time to take the answers to the next level....i don't think sex education at home has to be structured..kids asks a question...question gets answered....at age specific levels....
and sky....always nice to rile you up...LMAO
It's not that difficult to talk to your kids about sex. Once they hit kindergarden they are already being educated by their peers. Let them ask you questions and answer them honestly. If you make some big deal out of it, they may never ask your advice about anything. We have really bad problems here in FL. with female teachers having sex with students. The dating pool is so shallow in FL, that women are becoming teachers to find a date. Teach your children not to sleep with their teacher. Teach your kids to protect themselves from stranger danger.
didn't switch, don't know if they upgraded, I tried a different one didn't make a difference…
Jeese, I’m going to be broke if this mechanic keeps finding things wrong with my car….
at age specific levels....\

well, prior to the 4th grade diagram discussion I believed they found me under a cabbage patch.
LMAO... What you got for a high?

melt thought she was a catepillar! Speaking of catepillars melt, did you see my moth pic?
did you see my moth pic?

just popped over there, glad you said something! That's amazing! what a find!
I learned a lot about sex ed at a young age from the neighborhood pets. I remember once riding in the backseat of the car on "vacation" (a trip to see relatives requiring only necessary stops for refueling) and seeing a bull mounting a cow. I shouted for all in the car to "LOOK!", then realized what was happening and was completely mortified.
Post 26 - thanks! I can eat at least some tomatoes again. Shew!
then realized what was happening and was completely mortified.

that happened to me a few times with neighborhood cats. "Daddy! They're fighting! Help them!"
*chuckle* "they're not fighting, sweetie"
48/61/0

Growing up happens in a heartbeat. One day you're in diapers, the next day you're gone. But the memories of childhood stay with you for the long haul. I remember a place, a town, a house, like a lot of houses. A yard like a lot of other yards. On a street like a lot of other streets. And the thing is, after all these years, I still look back...with wonder.

The final line from the last episode of The Wonder Years.
All kids have to do is watch TV and surf the net...and they will know more than any of us...well cept the ones of us that watch tv and surf the net...never mind...I wasnt here!

There's a fine line between collecting brownie points and kissing butt.
Seems to me, brownie points are for those that often make mistakes and use them as compensation for stupidity.

What ever happened to just being yourself to get that Godly reward of appreciation and the occasional I.L.Y.?

It´s started! Long gas lines as panic buying kicks in due to truckers strikes over fuel prices. I filled both my vehicles this morning and by afternoon all stations are beginning to run out. At the supermarket things like bananas and vegetables are unavailable, even fish which is a staple here. So, this should get interesting over the next few weeks. very funny MJ
women get more sex education than men. they get a gyno and plenty of explaining at an early age. men get nothing, we just got to figure it out on our own. I think its fine the way it is. Let the women get the education and the boys get what's attached.
Only boobies an 8 year old should know about...
Photobucket
What jerk spray painted that bird's feet?

On the contrary, getting that boobie slammed in the car door would break my heart.
>:(
What am I missing?
ric, I would have been here earlier - but I was doing the kitchen duty things! I would say that I am quite surprised at my forecasts myself (but there are some things one must not admit on ric's blog....)

qod-
Sex ed should definately come from the parent. One comment said that it was too important to not let the schools do it (I agree and understand that was meant because some parents are slack and there is supposedly accountability for what schools are teaching.)...BUT it is also too important to let the schools mess it up. The parents' responsibility goes beyond teaching the kid about sex, but also knowing what is being taught at school.

What the child does with the knowledge can't really be taught at school. (influenced, yes! - along with a list of other influences!) Learning to be responsible (and I believe that responsible sex includes is more than just preventing pregnancies and STD's...) --- is the result of learning character/values, decision skills, being loved and happy with one's self, etc. Now I know that those things aren't always learned within the family - and many kids do well (or not well) regardless - but if the home isn't teaching those things....then sex education is about the same as just handing the kid a book to read.

And don't forget that we have to start early with our kids.... cause by the time they are 'tweens - we know nothing! Particularly about sex. Guess that is why all our kids had to have come from the cabbage patch!
Hello Ric hope everyone is doing well today...:)

How do you feel sex education should be taught?

Back seat of a car....;)

My boys are infatuated with boobies and the like. Having older siblings definatly fuels it..but it is inbred..I never understood Men fully untill I had boys..now I get it..the body grows but the mind..not so much...LOL
the body grows but the mind..not so much

so perfectly put, pb
Actually, my sex education came from my aunt and we all had to take a sex ed course during our freshman year in high school. They mainly taught us the consequences of not waiting or taking risks for STD's, pregnancies and where to go if one was being pressured, or needed birth control and protection. Looking back, the one thing the teacher did that was really neat was at the end of each class, we all had to say one thing we liked about ourselves that day. I now realize he was trying to get us to think good of ourselves and build up our esteem.

I personally think it should be the responsibility of the parent, however we do not live in a perfect world and everyone has responsible parents. Kids need to be educated, guided and have some sort of stability and structure whether that comes from a parent, a caring teacher or mentor. Somebody has to step up to the plate and quit letting these kids fall through the cracks. It scares me when I go to concerts or events and I see the girls gone wild scene...and they are only 14! I cringe anytime I see a little girl of 7 or so in a smaller version of adult clothes. I mean playing dress up in mom's clothes or makeup is one thing, dressing daily for school like that? When I was that age, I was running through the woods, climbing trees, riding my bike, wearing Hello Kitty t-shirts. But then those were also the days where one could trust the neighbors to give out candy to the kids.

Boy howdy y'all are being harsh on us xy chromosone hosters today.
cg i agree....you can't fail to teach it at home...and by that reasoning..i have no problem with it also being taught in school...same as..my kids actually believe in creationism....and evolution is taught in the school....it doesn't confuse them...it doesn't devalue what we've taught as a family unit..in fact..it allows for more conversations...by the way....let me pop up a few statistics
168. PBG00
I die laughing at some of the behind closed doors conversations I hear my kids having..I am thrilled it is part of their dialogue..and as long as they have some idea..the correct idea, I have no problem with them discussing it..There are alot of ewws and that gross..Its not sex really, more puberty, but the door is open. I do ind=struct my Daughter not to share too much with her Brothers as they really are not ready yet.
Sorry I don't have time to read everyone else's comments on the QOD right this minute but here's my 2¢.

Of course the biology of sex ed should be taught in schools. It gives kids the knowledge to avoid unplanned pregnancy, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, cervical cancer, etc. I don't believe those afflictions should be "punishment" for fornication.

re. #167
Oh my! They're actually making better decisions on their own. ;^)
Ahh - squashes and beans - much safer than tomatoes.
I never understood Men fully untill I had boys..now I get it..the body grows but the mind..not so much...LOL

Maybe that's why we do ALL the work. Because every woman that gives us an order makes our lowly undeveloped primative brain act without question, like a mother telling her son to take out the garbage. Yes, I see it clearly now. Women have been taking advantage of men for millions of years! Haha! But we don;t dare revolt. We aren't that stupid it seems..

;)
You ever hear of a man threatening to sleep on the couch for a week? "Sorry, honey, you were shopping too late last night with your sister, you ain't gettin' any tonight".

No. That is against our moral behavior.

No..it is because we wouldn't care!! LOL..

LOL, you mean a night with no one taking over the bed and snoring is supposed to be a punishment?

LOL, you mean a night with no one taking over the bed and snoring is supposed to be a punishment?

Well it certainly isn't a reason to do no work!
177. PBG00
LOL Gypsy..I think we would all sigh with relief..no snoring? You mean I could actually sleep through the night? And not want to kill him when after a night of listening to the buzz saw, he sleeps in while I get the kids ready for school? Or maybe the annoyance of him daring to tell me that he wasn't even asleep, so he couldn't have been snoring...
178. PBG00
It's more reason than you think MJ...And it's not like we are actually sacrificing anything...LOL
179. PBG00
MJ must be in his 20's.
well, considering a guy's idea of seduction is "hey, *wink wink*" it's not like there's a lot of work involved anyway, mj.
Oops
According to Dr. G00, I'm still 8 years old in the mind. So does it matter what age a man is?
MJ is obviously lying about the fact that he's actually single, 'cause with negative brownie points, he's not getting far in the animal kingdom

I have a few brownies saved, like a pack rat.

Hey, wait a minute. Brownie points with other women don't count, right?

We need universal brownie points!
You do realize I've kept this pretty civilized and without sexist remarks for the most part.

How many brownie points is that worth?
Is it my fault that I can find a woman to fall for the *wink* *wink* ... I mean if they are out there for the picking isnt that why we have farmers ?
Hey, wait a minute. Brownie points with other women don't count, right?
nope...
We need universal brownie points!

no, you actually need to be a decent gentleman to every single woman you meet
no, you actually need to be a decent gentleman to every single woman you meet

That's not what MY sex ed teacher told me.
every single woman you meet

EVERY one? Certainly there are exceptions.
(Oysters and jalapeños)
EVERY one? Certainly there are exceptions.

Only the ones that you ever want to have anything to do with you. OR any one that could ever possibly have a conversation with one that you want to be with. We pass notes.
poof
comr on mj.....i'm getting tired of playing police here.....i can't get banned...i'm doing good here on the forecast comment....no need to jeopardize that :-)
Pass notes? You mean like in school? I thought Dr. G00 said men keep the 8 year old mentality?

What did I do?
yup pass notes, remember that next time you go to Burger King
Nothing says "You're the best girl ever" like an official cardboard burger king crown on your girl's head.

Funny you should say that Appalachiangypsy, I failed to get enough ketchup packets on one date a while back and the girl told me I was jerk. I was all like: "Hey, gurl, but I got you a super size water! And this is how you treat me?!"

Man, my kids won’t even eat Burger King… Burger King is GROSS.
Jeez! I´m going back to waiting in line for gas!
ric sorry im not helping you in there. Its a little too much. I think I made myself clear.

Look at the topic of each post the subjects are silly but the singular obsession is real, (its all the same) and ask yourself is it really productive arguing with these people.
By late afternoon some stations had run out. Hopefully this will get resolved soon or I can say bye bye to my sports car and hello to my feet, bus, train, etc. Public transport will become a nightmare if everyone uses it at once instead of driving. But mostly I want my bananas back since no trucks can deliver!
jf..it's hilarious as all get out....it cracks me up..i no more think i can change their actions ...nor do i care to...i just like tossing some truth in once inawhile...do i really think people give them that much credit?...do i really think people aren't smart enough to see what is happening?..of course i do....kids on a blog..no matter the age...that's all..some pick questions..others attack bloggers a politicians...games...nothing more or less...i respect those that post truthful material repectfully...regardless if i agree or not
MB...life without any nannas...aint worth living
Its not like someone would be foolish enough to listen to that. I would hope not at least.

But I do think it creates a good deal of clutter that conceals real issues people should paying attention to.
Peanut butter and banana sandwich!!!
...i respect those that post truthful material repectfully...regardless if i agree or not

Good thing I am the most truthful and respectful blogger you know, regardless if you're too proud to say it. I know.
again jf...i think you're not giving the common man..enough credit..in fact....i think it does just the opposite...makes people say why...
add some sliced strawberries MB..you're in heaven
206. JFLORIDA 7:50 PM GMT on June 11, 2008 But I do think it creates a good deal of clutter that conceals real issues people should paying attention to.

Pick an issue Jfla.......but hope and change are not real issues just slogans.......neither is Bush.
yea probably true.
In all avenues though, what people SHOULD be paying attention to varies from person to person. That's the beauty of politics. It aint Agreeitics.
That's the beauty of politics. It aint Agreeitics.
:)
Ric,

Who is MB?
JFL, i said pick an issue.......you copied qoutes.

I will be more than happy to paste a few quotes as well.....but then you try to play the race card.......even though the quotes I refrance.....show Obamas racism.

Ric, you´re the best company on here!! It is your blog, after all!!

Tell them to win one for the Gipper for me!

bye G00
226. PBG00
Will do MJ :)
Oh you reposted it. yes for sure in IE shrek fairy land Oil companies only charge just what is fair for pumping our oil.

But on to sex ed.

I hate to admit it but I thought the sex ed horror stories and condom handouts are actually productive for mid teens.

By then they are probably pretty aware just via median and peer contact. The should get some of what can go wrong also
Its not good to mention war JFL. You see when the networks aren't drawing ratings off it anymore, its fiscally responsible of them to ignore facts and down play the war. What was once "a historical war for the media" becomes "an unneccessary war" later. Especially with American Idol and Survivor around the corner. If you can't fit a war into a 6 week extravaganza, just bomb from the sky like no tomorrow. That's what Bubba woulda done.

you know Mjolnir, I actually agree with you completely on that, its a shame too.
Jfl, oil compains recive 5% of profits from oil sales......government taxes are 15%.....do the math who is really profiting off the american people.

And of course tax and spend liberals want more taxes on oil and corperations.......ask yourself who is going to be paying for these increases?????? Yep you and me.....

Now JFL my good freind Ric.....has asked me not to go too hard on his fellow liberals on his blog so I must ask you to refrain from the political talk on the QoD unless....Ric asks a political QoD......HINT HINT WINK WINK~!!!!! :)
80 percent to play with. - im talking preproduction. The tax is independent of the price at the pumps. When back in the 90's gas was 99 cents the tax was the same.

So... Something horrible must have happened between the late nineties and now, hint, hint, wink, wink.
How do you feel sex education should be taught?

I see this blog is off topic again....so I'll bring it back. Way too long to see what anyone else has posted, so I'll just go solo.

We begin Family Life in 5th grade. Parents have the option of having their kids excluded, but I would have to say that few do. Parents have an opportunity to preview the curriculum before it is taught in the classroom. Parents are involved in the experience. We introduce the human body to the kids, including all parts, and naming them appropriately. Kids get homework to do with their parents at night.

It begins with giving the kids a list of vocabulary and having the kids define the words BEFORE any instruction is given. It's really funny to read some of the responses, but a true heads up as to why it needs to be taught. (they get a post test at the end of the unit)

Kids are allowed to ask questions anonymously (they write a question and put it in a box), and those that are over the top or inappropriate are either not addressed or handled by the district nurse, or sometimes we might just say - that's a question for your parents. The district nurse pays a visit and explains how babies are BORN (not made - although that IS discussed) but born. Wow - you should hear the kids. Probably prevents a lot of unwanted pregnancy right there.

I taught Family Life last year as a 5th grade teacher, and I absolutely loved it. It was a great way to open the lines of communication with the kids and their parents, but sometimes the kids feel more comfortable asking a teacher than their own parents.

I believe that sex education should begin in the home, but to be honest a great many parents are too uncomfortable or don't know what to say. With this unit being taught in 5th grade, it opens the lines of communication and usually takes off from there. There are still a lot of parents out there that think if they don't talk about sex, their kids won't do it. I don't think so.

Anyway, that's my .02¢
there we go...first hand experience..i'm getting into this whole concept of doing and not talking and here we have doing..and insight...thanx karen
Thanks Ric, and it's never too early to start. Begin by just letting your kids guide the questioning. Don't tell more than they need to know (when they are very young), but answer questions simply and to the point. Don't give cutesy names to body parts. A breast is a breast and not a boob. A penis is a penis and not some cute little name. That'll stop a lot of confusion for kids right there. Plus, it makes them more comfortable asking questions later when they have the right word.

Now I'm going to go watch my two adorable grandsons....and I know exactly how they were created!
How about grandma panties and fishing waders
Grandma panties? Yikes!

>slowly backing away from this blog<

biology in school, morality at home.
Well techinically its Thursday here, but I finally get to see the QOD! Can I still answer it?? Can I??
Good MORNINGGGG! ;)
