Wind Storm Claims One Life

By: plapman , 12:29 PM GMT on May 16, 2012

Today will bring increasing cloudiness this morning with the wind becoming southeast at 20 km/h (12 mph) gusting to 40 km/h (25 mph) late this afternoon. a high of 19C(66F) is expected. UV index 6 or high.
Tonight will see clearing with the southeast wind at 20 km/h (12 mph) gusting to 40 km/h (25 mph) and a low of 10C(50F).

The windstorm mentioned in yesterdays blog claimed one life. 2 gentlemen were fishing in a small 14 foot boat ,on lake Manitoba, and which overtopped by a wave and capsized. One of the gentleman managed to swim to shore but the other is still missing. The storm came up so quickly they never had a chance to bring the boat to shore before it struck.
The city is still cleaning up broken branches and downed trees some of which were uprooted.
I can't imagine how people survive hurricanes with winds much stronger than we experienced.
I got Abbey out on our walk along the gopher trails yesterday and didn't see any damage along our route.

The only real taste of anything tropical we had was when Ike roared through in 2008 with 60 mph winds, and let me tell you, I want no part of anything stronger!

Take care!

Good Morning Tony ~

I second Alley's thoughts about the lost fisherman and surviving friend on the boat the other day. The weather can be so tragically fickle these days and it's always best to use common sense and be prepared for any possible weather event. Nevertheless, it is such a tragedy for his surviving family members and friends.

Judging by our local radar map, it looks like our 3 days of intermittent rain or downpours are finally over. We're looking forward to a return to sunshine and warmer temps for the weekend. Hard to believe that half of May is already over with and our Memorial Day weekend is less than two weeks away. This holiday weekend usually serves as an unofficial kick-off to the summer season with fond remembrances of past loved ones and, later, cookouts or other summer-like activities if sunny outside. We also get to finally put our heavy flannels and blankets away for future cold seasons. YEAH!

Glad that you didn't see any nearby residual windstorm damage while walking Abbey the other day. In recent years, we've seen our fair share of near hurricane force winds our way, too, and hope that there'll be a reprieve this go round. June 1st marks one full year since an historical and damaging tornado hit and tore up a large swath of Central Mass. It was the first severe one to finally reach us in over fifty years. They still haven't fully recovered. One sure never knows what to expect weatherwise these days.

May you and yours have a decent, safe Wednesday and remainder to your week! Enjoy those walks with Abbey and continue to play it safe!

Good morning Tony. How sad for the folks who lost their family member. Such a tragedy. Once again a case of not having on a life jacket when out on the lake in a small boat.

Glad to hear you are doing well and that you did get out for a walk with Abbey yesterday. I finally konked out at 3 PM and slept until 7:30 PM. I was just so tired from not sleeping the night before I could not wait until a proper bedtime. I still managed to go to bed at 10 and slept until 4 AM so I am feeling a bit better for having a good sleep.

Sun is finally shining again but temps have cooled a bit since early this morning after the bit of rain we got. Still all in all it will remain a nice day with only light breezes.

Have yourself a great Wednesday dear one.
