A Change of Scenery From the basement Window

By: plapman, 1:12 PM GMT on August 30, 2013

Today will be mainly cloudy with fog patches that developed dissipating this morning. The high will be 27C(81F).
Tonight will start cloudy with a 30% chance of showers this evening and after midnight and risk of a thunderstorm but clearing overnight.
------------------------------------------------- ----
If the lurkers who visit my blog had been her at the right time they could have caught a glimpse of me weeding the Queen's flower garden in front of the webcam. What an impressive site that must have been with the plapman on his hands and knees and butt facing the basement window view.
After the heavy rain we had in the morning it sure made it easy to pull the weeds and ge the main root out.
I should have made a salad for the Queen. :)

A Torrential Downpour On The Prairie

By: plapman, 2:35 PM GMT on August 29, 2013

Today will see showers ending early this afternoon then clearing. There is of a thunderstorm this morning which could drop 15 to 25 mm(5/8th to 1 inch of moisture on us. The high will be 27C(81F).
Tonight will see a f few clouds and a low of 16C(61F).
------------------------------------------------- -
The risk of a thunderstorm turned into a torrential downpour We just had a 10 minute thunderstorm that must have dumped inch of rain predicted.
The Queen and me were caught in it on the way to the store to pick up milk.
There's a street in Portage, Lorne Avenue, That I call Lake Lorne. Every time we get a heavy rain the water backs up and covers the road. Today as usual it was covered in water when we came back from the local convenience Store.
Ater my neighbor cleaning out the gutters my basement stayed dry.:).

More Renos on the Prairie

By: plapman, 11:20 AM GMT on August 28, 2013

Today will be sunny with a high of 33C(91F).
Tonight will start clear with increasing cloudiness before morning. The overnight low will be 19C(66).
------------------------------------------------- --
Yesterday I had a guy come and make a railing for our front steps. The BIL and me built new ones a couple of years ago but never put a railing on the steps. The Queen recently read that steps over 2 steps high need a railing. Ours are 6 high.
Today I'm going to the lab for a CT scan. I guess they didn't see the problem on the pancreas with the ultra sound.

Another Hot Day For the Northern Edge

By: plapman, 11:44 AM GMT on August 26, 2013

Today will see a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 30C(86F).
Late this evening it will clear at temps fall to 16C(62F).
------------------------------------------------- ---
I was going to cut the back lawn yesterday but it was just too warm for me. I'll have to get out early today and do it.
The neighbors dog gets lonely when they leave him out in the back yard and go out. Yesterday he was out there howling. I should make a gate in the fence so Abbey can go over and keep him company.
I think it's funny to hear him out there howling like a coyote.
The weather we've been having has sure made me believe in global warming. The remainder of the week is supposed to continue with above normal temps, it seems that the seasons have shifted by a couple of weeks.

It's Hot and Humid On The Northern Prairie

By: plapman, 10:56 AM GMT on August 25, 2013

Today will be sunny with a high of 32C(90F).high.Tonight, 25 August
Tonight will be clear with an overnight low of 14C(60F).
Yesterday there was a humidex warning for most of southern Manitoba so instead of taking 1 long walk on the gopher trails Abbey and me took 2 short ones. Even then Abbey came home panting. I've tried bring a bottle of water and a small bowl but she only takes one lap and won't drink anymore until we get home and then she drinks from her own bowl. I still can't fathom how people living near a large body of water and where it's hot all year round can take the heat and humidity.

A Meeting In The garage

By: plapman, 12:25 PM GMT on August 23, 2013

Today will be sunny with a southerly wind at 30 km/h. The high will be 29C(84F).
Tonight will bring a few clouds with a 60% chance of showers or thunderstorms before morning. the southerly flow will become light this overnight at the temp falls to 21C(70F).
Yesterday I went to visit a friend whose restoring a 1955 Dodge truck. While we were chatting another retired fellow dropped by. I remarked that it was funny that 3 guys had congregated in a garage to visit and no one was drinking. The friend said "Yup 20 years ago a bottle of rum would have disappeared".
Things sure change as you get older and wiser. Age does have advantages.

Grand Kids On The Prairie and Elsewhere

By: plapman, 11:28 AM GMT on August 22, 2013

Today will be sunny with a high 26C(79F).
Tonight will remain clear with an overnight low of 12C(54F).
The Queen and me attended a birthday party for the oldest great granddaughter. She's reached the magic age of 6.
todays project will be to make a frame for the Queen to put 2 8X10 photos of the 2 great granddaughters in.
While on the subject of pictures I received a new photo of the youngest grandson in Newfoundland.
I've never posted one of him before so here he is.

I sure would like to meet him in person.

Not All of Manitoba Enjoys Crystal Clear Skies

By: plapman, 1:39 PM GMT on August 21, 2013

Today will start sunny then change to a mix of sun and cloud this morning. The wind becoming northwest 20 km/h this morning. Today's high will be26C(79F).
Tonight will be clear with a northwest wind at 20 km/h that will become light late this evening as temps fall to 11C(52F).
------------------------------------------------- ----
From the photo I posted last night you can see how smog free we are here on the prairie.
I once worked near Flin Flon in northern Manitoba where there is a copper/zinc mine as well as a refinery to extract the metals from the ore. Clear air was not common there. A huge chimney constantly bleached out smoke. I was there for 3 weeks and there were numerous days with air quality advisories. For miles downwind of the chimney you could see the effects of the chimney smoke as dead vegetation.
I have to apologize to the Hudson's Bay Mining and Smelting company for giving such a bad report but that's what I saw while staying there.

Today will start mainly sunny but will see increasing cloudiness this afternoon. There is the risk of a thunderstorm late this afternoon. The high will be 30C(86F).
Tonight it will clear as the temp falls to 13C(55F)
------------------------------------------------- ----
Yesterday I had an unscheduled trip to the vampires to check the kidneys in preparation for a CT scan. I guess they didn't see what they wanted to see when they did the sonogram a couple of weeks ago. On my last trip to the doctor she said she didn't want to expose me to more radiation than necessary but would do one if they didn't see the cyst on my pancreas with the ultrasound.
I'm going to have to get Abbey out for her trip along the gopher trails before it gets too warm. yesterday she panted for 1/2 an hour after our trip.

A New Walking Path

By: plapman, 11:58 AM GMT on August 18, 2013

Good morning.
I've decided to make a new post today.
The city is making a walking path in my area. In a couple of places it crosses my route along the gopher trails.
Portage is devided by Saskatchewan Avenue. The south side has much better scenery with our Crescent Lake and Island Park. The northern half has only the main lines of the two transcontinental rails and an industrial area.
The south end has a walking path that skirts crescent Lake, an oxbow of the Assiniboine River. The path in the southern area is paved and even has yellow devideing lines. The northern path is only crushed limestone so far. While talking with a friend I asked if we were going to get pavement and lines. He said probably not as we in the northern area know that if we meet a lady pushing a stroller or baby carriage to yield the right of way. :)
I don't think I'll be using the new pathway as it's bounded by residential fences and railway lines. It sure won't give Abbey much of a chance to do her gopher hunts.

The hoard has let me down.:(
I looked for some suitable material for the mini-grandfather clock and couldn't find anything that might work. Today after my walk with Abbey I'll search again.

By: plapman, 11:57 AM GMT on August 07, 2013

Today will be mainly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers. The will be high 18C(64F) .
Tonight will start mainly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers early this evening then clearing late this evening. The overnight low will be 7C(45F).
My webcam doesn't update. I keep getting an error that says "read Timed out". I looked at the web cam section of UW and a lot of cams seem to be having the same problem as a lot of them are only showing pictures from yesterday.
Yesterday I cut the front lawn. with all the rain we've been getting it nice and hick as if I've been watering it.

A Late Start on the Prairie

By: plapman, 10:05 PM GMT on August 06, 2013

I really late getting online today. I had to go and visit the vampires this morning. Then it was time to get a new visitor map.
Somewhere in the process I lost my radar. I took me a while to get it back up and running but it seems to be OK now.
I've saved the HTML code for the webcam, and radar into a text file so it will be easier to get back if I loose it again.
The Queens at work, the granddaughter and kids are in Calgary and I think the youngest at home daughter is having a nap. Josh it's quiet here.

Tonight will be cloudy with a few showers beginning late this evening and ending before morning. There will be a risk of thunderstorms late this evening and after midnight. The overnight low will be 13C(55F).
The granddaughter and 2 ggranddaughters are off to Calgary by air today to visit with my x sil. it will be quite the experience for the little girls.
I remember taking the granddaughter to Edmonton to visit her paternal grandparents.
On the way there I had a window seat and as long as we over Manitoba I knew where we were. Traveling all over the province while working has left a permanent map of Manitoba in my head.
This was before flight security was tightened and on the way home we were invited to the cockpit.

At one time Portage claimed to be the Strawberry capital of Canada with numerous strawberry growers in the area and we had a Strawberry Festival which was held on the main street in the business section.

The other day while walking Abbey I noticed a spot where water was streaming out of the ground in the ditch. On the way home I spotted a city truck and flagged it down and told the driver I thought they had a water main break. Yesterday there was a backhoe excavating the area to repair the pipe.
Time to go the Queen's just got up.
