After the Hurricane Tip : Receipt for washing clothes

By: palmettobug53, 12:58 AM GMT on October 31, 2005

Just a little humor here. I spent a bit of time stomping
clothes in the bathtub until my power kicked back in 2 weeks
after Hugo. Sure could have used this receipt! LOL

Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following receipt:

This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook - with spelling errors and all.

Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.

Sort things, make 3 piles

1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.

To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.

Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.

Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch. Hang old rags on fence. Spread tea towels on grass.

Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. Turn tubs upside down.

Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

Paste this over your washer and dryer. Next time when you think things are bleak, read it again, kiss that washing machine and dryer, and give thanks.

First thing each morning you should run and hug your washer and dryer, also your toilet---those two-holers used to get mighty cold!

(For you non-southerners -wrench means rinse.)

Note from Palmetto: I remember my great-grandmother had a 4 holer outside (it was a BIG family), no indoor plumbing except a water pump in the kitchen from the well, and chamber pots under all the beds. This was in the late 50's.

The Red Planet LoomsTonight.......Mars Watch

There's one good thing about being without power: You have a spectacular view of the stars. It was the only good thing about the two weeks we were in the dark after Hugo. You could see the night sky again, with no city lights to drown it out.
This weekend will be excellent for viewing the Red Planet.
To read about it, go to:

Basic info

By: palmettobug53, 2:59 AM GMT on October 13, 2005

Have lived in the Holy City, where local legend has it that the Ashley and the Cooper meet to form the Atlantic, pretty much all my life. I've been around for Hazel (stayed), Gracie (stayed), Hugo(stayed, tho Lord knows, I wish I hadn't) and Floyd (hauled buggy on that one). Along with all the lesser storms that have threatened, brushed by, passed under or over, thrown rocks, blown raspberries and generally been insulting.
I like mammals, birds, insects and reptiles of all kinds except palmetto bugs (don't ask) and skinks. Enjoy gardening/yard work, plants, art, mahjonng solitaire, crafts, thrift shopping and am an obsessive reader - mostly mysteries, history, cops/private eyes - anything but porn and romances (yuck).
Pound a keyboard all day at work. Since I am pretty much deaf as a post, I can't use a phone. Email is my lifeline. Guess that's why I'm sucked into my computer so much when I'm at home.
Hate housework and inside chores, grocery shopping, and getting up in the morning to go to work. Don't mind the job; it's the getting there part I hate. Hate dial-up; love my broadband.
