09:30, no wind. no-see-ums awful. 60f. overcast. high tide on the suwannee river. water temperatures in river were lower than out in the sound - 14-15C, 57-59f. felt colder, too.
sampling the fishes of the lower suwannee with the otter trawl and the bait seine. the trawl pulled in a lot of channel catfish of varying sizes and a few white catfish. trawl also caught several black crappie. but the catch of the day with the trawl was 2 young-of-the-year gulf sturgeon! their total length was around 2 ft. these lovely little ancient fish were gently handled, measured, and immediately returned to the water. the bait sein either pulled in no fish at all or the last set had 5 species of sunfish - a redbreast, several spotted, a blue-gill, and an unidentified sunfish which was retained for identification along with some golden shiners that no one was sure about. when the suwannee floods, freshwater fish show up that us marine biologists don't know. representatives of these fish were collected for identification.
since we were on the river all day, the bird count was low. some ospreys and a few pelicans and cormorants were about it. no ducks.. yellow astors were blooming in the swamp. the water was very high from the rains this past week.
15:10, west wind at 8 knts. knocked some of the gnats down but they still were pesky. 65f. the sun finally showed itself around 13:00. we took off one layer of clothing.
16:20, 70f at back door. west breeze. a lot of smoke from rancher to west burning hay piles. what a jerk! sunny. unloaded a few bales of hay from feedstore.
18:40, 68f. hay to all. pup happy to be playing with guardian. cleaned out dog pen. fed parrot. got 2 eggs.

21:20, 59f, a mist. waxing gibbous moon up high. stars lovely. some critter living under the house. thinking of setting the live trap tomorrow evening and hoping it's not the skunk.. good night.

06:50, 45f, foggy. roosters hollarin'. guardian perky out by truck. brief walk with pup. donkeys complaining. chilly out. got almost 2" of rain yesterday.
10:00, 45f, gray, mizzling. 3 year old eagle huddling in dead pine along 345. ditches are full and the ponds in the pastures overflowing again. the folks who lived at the farm with the cows, horses, donkeys, geese, goats, and the llama have packed up and left, lock, stock, and barrel. their neighbors with the barrel-racing horses are still hanging on but seem to have a bit higher ground.
10:30, mid tide rising at CK. cormorants at oyster bar. north wind, 8 knts. 45f. bone-chilling cold with the wind off the water. fed cat something extra. untangled and perused a soaking wet trawl in the back of the boat. took a while with very cold hands in the cold wind. dumped water out of the trawls from the rain yesterday. cat helped, up on the boat in the cold wind. good cat! mended big seine, huddled behind its box.

06:20, 49f, drizzling. roosters crowing. chilly north breeze. no sign of guardian who was up all night.. pup doesn't like the drizzle. don't look good for going out. guardian shows up just when I left. escorted me to gate.
08:30, but we went out anyway. mid tide falling at CK. NE wind, 8 knts. 50f. gray and overcast. brown pelicans and 1 great blue heron at oyster bar. a lot of dithering about sampling today. the other crew called their trip off. but after sitting at the ramp and watching the flags blow straight out with the wind increasing to 12 knts, we decided to give it a try. we could always come back in. which we didn't.
sampling the fishes in suwannee sound with the otter trawl and the bait seine doing offshore sets. catches were low all around except for one shore set at snake key where we pulled in lots of 2 species of killifish, and YOY pinfish and spot, and anchovies. netted 2 sheepshead minnows (Cyprinodon varigatus). don't find them much. one otter trawl was packed with star fish. another pulled in a dozen atlantic stingrays. and we had three trawls where we only pulled in 2 or 3 fish, batfish, mostly. the swift current with the opposing wind was probably to blame. it's hard for the trawl to fish right in those conditions although we did bring in a large amount of by-catch, mostly drift algae, so there just might not have been too many fishes out there.
water was very clear once we got beyond the out islands, despite the chop. visibility was over 1.5 to 2.5 meters depending on how close inshore we were. water temperatures had dropped from yesterday to 17C, 63f, which felt warm since the air temperatures were almost 10 degrees colder. it was choppy but not excessively so - not like it looked out towards the horizon. positively jagged seas out there. between the wind and the temperature it was cold. all 4 of us complained of the cold. our hands were wet and icy. and we were wearing a fair amount of clothes since all of us went to our trucks and put on extra clothing from the get-go.
saw one loon. ducks were sheltering in coves. white pelicans rested on the sand bars. cormorants were all over. there were other birds around but too far away to identify. one small pod of dophins inshore.
15:10, high tide at #4 bridge east wind down to 5 knts. 57f. a mist growing. fed cat who was napping on big net. a few ducks around bridge.
17:50, 52f at back door. overcast. drizzling. got no eggs. hay and feed to all. red rooster followed us around yard but hasn't figured out how to jump fences and get some of the grain. pup watches him closely. dragged dog house out of sheep yard and placed it in front yard for guardian who won't use it. making lima bean soup. got a fire going. pup and cat already sleeping in front of it.
21:00, 51f, very dark out. hardly any ambient light. guardian eating her dinner. pup imagines varmints down by the sheep barn. donkeys out in the woods. good night, moon. I know you are up there somewhere...

08;30, blow-out tide at CK. north wind, 6 knts. 57f. cormorants and 1 brown pelican at the oyster bar. egrets in the marsh. have to wait for tide to change..
09:30, traffic jam at local gas station. all clam/crab boats filling up to go out. sampling southern waters around CK out to corrigans reef with bait sein and 600 ft. seine. catches were not as good as yesterday but we had to contend with lower tide, strong currents, and running aground. the crew pushed the boat a lot in the a.m. some sets had to be moved to areas with more water and less current. bait seine catches were pitiful - a few silversides and anchovies and some pinfish. the interesting fish of the day were 2 skillet fish - a small fish in the goby family with a shape like a skillet and a sucker on the bottom of their disk. a bottom dwelling fish with eyes on top of the head, less than 2" long. pulled in some nice whiting (Menticirrus americanus) on a set near dog island. and another set got a big mackerel. always pinfish.. and stingrays.
spotted a few loons on way out to seahorse key. white pelicans on the shell bars. lots of ducks and cormorants. birds everywhere. big flock of laughing and ring-billed gulls on sand bar. one pod of dolpins.
visibility low in water, about 0.5m. water temperature, 18-19C, 65-67f. overcast. a light chop.
16:00, fed cat. tide falling at #4 bridge. east wind, 5 knts. 63f. crabber picking up traps with brown pelicans behind the boat. great blue on peat bank. mist rising out of pines on ride home.

wind slowly picked up to 12-15 with 18 knt gusts. and whitecaps. water visibility less than 0.5 meters. water temps, 18-19C, 63-67f. sunny. a gorgeous but tiring day! SW wind. clouds.
